2 weeks before I bought my new computer, I noticed an increase in bootup time on my Win XP machine. It looked like it stalled while booting, and I could hear what turned out to be a harddisk spinning up and shortly after going back to zero. This would happen multiple times. Also in XP, rarely the screen would just freeze and the computer would turn off. I assumed this was due to the harddisk as well (everything else works). A few times, after the BIOS the SATA controller would display only one of the two harddrives.
On my new PC the drive displayed the same behaviour, except that its partitions were not visible in the OS at all.
Now a few weeks have passed and today I connected the drive to both PCs again to scavenge my music collection. Results:
No hiccups at all. The drive was discovered on both the old and the new PC. First I used the old one, running Ubuntu, to copy all the music onto an external drive.. without issues. Then I installed the drive in the new PC and it is discovered here without any hiccups as well. It's as if the problem never existed. I've already used WD Lifeguard Tools to test the harddrive and it's all "green". There was some odd message during POST saying "XXX is not an ATAPI device", which is funny considering both drives and my DVD are SATA.
Now what the hell happened there? Did it just decide to not work for 2 weeks? Is it still gonna die on me? Maybe the firmware is shot?
