WD HD benchmarks crappy

I have a Western Digital hard drive @7200 and when I benchmark it with SANDRA it runs really really crappy. I scores really low compared to the others. I was just wondering if anybody else has this problem? Do you think I could have bad hard drive some how? I just want to know why it is benchmarking so crappy. I know I have enough power cause I have a 500 Watt power supply. I thought maybe it was getting too hot and that slowed it down?????? When Sandra benchmarks my HD it runs it constantly. My light on my computer never turns off when it is benchmarking. Should it be scoring that low? Could it be over heating or something? Or is it just a bad hard drive? Should I get a HD fan and try to cool it down cause I have two open slots on my computer still open ( the kind of slot your DVD or Burner would go in) and I could just put one in there. What do you think?

Give the full specs of the drive....ie ata100...model...size...

Could be a lot of things, but we need to first make sure we are looking at apple to apple comparisons...


Use hdtach 2.61 program and list those score...

Sandra should cause the hdd led to be on full-time as it is doing its work...don't worry about that....

SiSoft Sandra's HDD benchmarks are in no way related to real world performance, not to mention it's extremely inconsistent.

If you want to believe SiSoft then I've a pair of 10K RPM SCSI drives that SiSoft consistently reports as slower then their reference ATA33 5400RPM drive.

For a basic determinator of performance you might want to look into HDTach, or Atto.
For more accurate measurement still WinBench99, and IOmeter (for server disk performance only) are quite good.
IPeak is also extremely good, but it's pricey and no longer widely available.

AS you can see mine scored really really low compared to these other drives. It didn't give a specific name of the other hard drives.

your problem is that DMA in not enabled... you need to enable dma to get the full performance of the drive

yes, enable DMA= direct memory access. faster.

Yeah, you need to enable DMA. But nobody has told you how to do it yet, and if you don't know how, here's how...
Go into My computer rightclick menu > properties > Hardware tab > device manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controls > Whichever IDE Channel your hard disk is on (right-click) > properties > advanced settings tab > enable DMA there.
Now these instructions are as I see it on Windows 2000 Pro, which should be very close to WinXP.
