WD HDrive SOOOO VERRRRRY SLOOOOW!!!

I have an epox 8kha+, WD 40 GIG HD 7200, win xp home

My HD is running (closing / opening programs ) very slowly. I think I remember reading on a anandtech forum about other people with this prob. My sandra 2002 scores rate my HD at under the speed of a 5400 rpm.

Does this have anything to do with the PCI latency probs with the VIA chipset? I have the latest bios.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

most likely dma is not enabled.
right click my computer => properties => hardware => device manager => ide/ata/atapi controllers => primary ide channel => advanced settings => transfer mode

set to dma if available.
hopefully this will fix it.

Well I tried that and yes the UDMA 5 is set to run? any other suggestions? Is it possible the 4 in 1 drivers are screwed up?

what are your system specs?
and do you have and lame programs running like the adaptec cdrw software.

I forced ATA 100 in the bios, checked UDMA in device manager, tried Auto in the BIOS, NO DICE!!!!

How are your IDE devices physically set up? If they're on the same IDE channel you might want to try and put them both on separate channels (ie. Hard drive on IDE0 and CDRW on IDE1.

Time for a stupid question, did you install the right cable on the hd? The 80pin goes on the hd (usually the primary bus), the 40 on the secondary bus.

Actually, they are both 40 pin, but they are 40 and 80 conductor The 80 conductor is the ata 100 cable, 40 is ata 33.

Ouch, Evadman, caught me in a slip--yes they are both 40 pin, it's the # of wires in each ribbon that I was refering to

Do you have any other device on that line with your WD? What jumper settings are you using? (CS, MA, SL etc.) Are you using an ATA100 IDE cable? If not you will be limited to UDMA33.

Yes both cables are the 80 conductor type. HD is only thing on ide0 (Master). Have CDROM(Slave) and CDRW(Master) on ide1.

try setting the wd hd jumper to cable select, not master. i seem to recall that wd hard drives dont like to be a single master. if that doesnt do it, try dornloading the wd drive tester and running it on your hd. there may be something wrong with it.

Well thanks everyone for help. It seems that my drive likes to be set to single (no jumper). I used the WD UDMA utility on their site and it seems to have fixed my problem. It still runs a few points slower on Sandra than the standard that was used, but much better than befor. Thanks again
