Nice price, i was dissapointed with the 36 gigers. I wonder if these are the newer versions based on the 74gig raptors. Supposedly they "new" 36 gig raptors are up to speed of the 74gig one's. I've got 7200 rpm drives that have a better read speed than the 36gig raptors, But not as good seek time.

I went out and got one, I'm pretty certain they are the "newer generation" version. Is there a way to verify? Let me know and I can give you a 100% sure answer.

Whats the production date of the unit. One thing about WD warranty is that they are from Date of Production not Date of Purchase.

Anyone looked at there drives and let me know when they were made????

Outpost is NOT the same as Fry's B&M (brick and mortar) stores. The Fry's ad in the local paper (Houston Chronicle) shows the 36 gig raptor for $99.99 minus $30 mail-in-rebate. Fry's does own Outpost, but they do NOT have the same deals.

I doubt that (unless they give you even longer than 5 years beyond production, like something reasonably beyond how long that item would be for sale)

I just got my 2..not sure of the production date 'cause I haven't checked yet but they now come with the new secure cable which is a better SATA cable. The standard one can break your connector on the HD if you apply to much force...my roommate broke both of his Raptors (and the breakage is NOT covered by warranty).

The deal at Fry's is great $139 normal price $99 in store + a $30 rebate (limit 2 per household) Sale in AZ ends 11/9/04.

Ones I got were Aug 2004 as well. I believe that means they're new generation.

Yes, but the online price is $139 instead of the $99 in-store tag. Online ordering wouldn't be a hot deal at all.
