wen to Fry's today originally to pick up a 150GB Raptor, but then chickened out at the last moment staring at the $299 price tag since my 36GB is working fine. Then went to CompUSA just for the hell of it and saw the 74 on sale for $129.

$239 - $80 IR - $30 MIR = $129. $173 out the door after CA tax (urgh).
Today is the last day though. Might need to run out later and buy another one for RAID 0.

Not too bad, but if your mb supports SATA II, Raid0 may be a better choice with 2 of these drives (total cost of < $110 shipped): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822145082

I own a single 74 gig Raptor, but these Hitachi's in Raid0 are the cat's meow. Here is a bench of them in action: http://members.cox.net/mucker/Raid0.jpg

Burst: 334 MB/sec
Ave read: 97 MB/sec

The only advantage of the single Raptor is access time. The Hitachi's win in everything else: price, burst speed, capacity, etc..

Your choice...2 Raptors for $286 AR
or
2 Hitachi's for <$110 shipped. The choice wasn't hard for me.......

74 raptor HAS been aroud 130 AR from newegg for a while now.. 130 for a 74gb hdd with a little more speed isn't worth it imo

Just built a new machine using one of these as the boot drive. I was concerned that the 10K rpm would make it a louder drive but it's actually very quiet.

Any difference between the two?

from storagereview: "In the end, the 00FLC0 revision of the Raptor WD740GD appears to have sacrificed a small amount of its multi-user prowess to effect some slightly larger single-user performance gains. The most significant advances occur in the Office and High-End DriveMarks, where the newer version's 12-14% improvement yields a tangible and pleasing "snap" to operations. These gains allow the Raptor to close the gap that was starting to appear between WD's venerable 10K RPM unit and today's state-of-the-art 7200 RPM offerings.

Smaller advances dot our gaming tests. There, however, the Raptor was already holding its own... the 00FLC0 gives the WD740GD even more breathing room. "
