Damn , wd raptor is awsome. I cant beleive how cheap they are for being 10,000, a 40gb scsi would cost you a fortune... but the 10k rpm raptor sata drive is only $200 (under $200 if you know how to look).

Run a search, it's been posted on this board.

I don't know where you buy HD's but where I do the current gen 36GB Cheetah 10k.6 is $174, and the Atlas 10K IV is $189.

yep scsi drives have fallen in price a lot, but the cost of a good U160 scsi controller is what makes them expensive still.

yeah I'm waiting for people that have this drive to comment on exactly how loud this drive is, then I'll consider getting one or not

Newegg and Hypermicro bother have a LSI Logic U160 controller for about $42 - $52. Basically the same chip as the ones on the Adaptec 19160 controller. The price of entry for SCSI has dropped alot.

this would be a great drive to run OS and games on, but I want to know how loud it is too. Hope someone could make a review on it or something...

Do you like 10K scsi whine?

Quiter than the beta model, but still:
" It nonetheless still emits a very slight squeal reminiscent of third- or fourth-generation 10k RPM SCSI units. Though the sound does not bother me personally, it may irritate those who insist in ultra-quiet operation from their machines."

I used to have a IBM 36LZX one of the quiter 3rd gen 10K drives, ugh it wasn't loud but that high pitched sound annoyed me to no end.

SCSI drives perform slower then the WD SE drives in apps. But are obviously faster in transfers rates though.

Slower in apps . One of the reason I won't go SCSI as they are slower in apps

The Raptors look dam tempting! But do I really need it? I already have 2x WD80gb SE drives in non raid. I need my 160gb of space!

Current 10k drives don't whine, at least the current IBM/Hitachi ones don't. They just make this incredible noise every minute and half that sounds like some sick tape drive. Get an array of those things and it sounds really funky...

I'm going to record the damn thing now that I think about it! Reminds me of a hippy friend of mine whose girlfriend drove her car into a lake. We pulled it out and got it running again and everything seemed ok but the horn! It made a noise that made heads turn!

Yes I would take SCSI over SATA any day! Two drives in a system isn't enough. Now if you were allowed to chain more than one drive per wire, that would be sooooooper!

Slower in Apps? I don't think so. Program loading perhaps. Of course RAID HBA's with lots of cache and fast processors negate any differences. The Raptor is THE fastest drive in the non SCSI realm, but SCSI belongs (and will always) in any production and/or mission critical machine. Most desktop users want more than 36GB so...

What the F to do? Use a Raptor for root and get a bigass IDE drive to store all your p..stuff.

I use a 10K 36gb SCSI drive as my root plus a 120gb and 160gb IDE drives to store all of my data. Works great

It's in RAID 0 and should be better when SI/Abit releases the new drivers/BIOS...Here's a stand alone Raptor and I would imagine RAID1 would score close to the same. I use the WD JB to back up my RAID 0
