Yo.

I might be looking into 2 of the 36gig Raptors, but I just have a question for any current users. Are the drives whiny, or annoying at all in the noise they produce? My bro has some IDE WD drive and its quite whiny.. My case fans are around ~32dBA, and I have a Tornado running at 7V (Probably in the ~35dBA range Id say). Thankies!

They have a high pitched whine to them but with a tornado you probably won't notice. The newer ones are supposed to be much more quiet but I think its a craps shoot trying to get a new one (if they are even out yet) because they are listed as the same model.

I noticed a whine for the 1st 2minutes of turning my drive on, then it's been quieter than my 7200Rpm WD 80Gb (also non whining)

I can hear it spin up at boot, but don't really notice it once it's running.

I have 2 in raid0, and they sure do make a whining sound. So much so, that I bought a new case to help block it out. If your case has a ton of fans, you might not be able to hear it, though.

I don't notice it much anymore, but I really did when I first got it... and that's with the case buttoned up and 3 case fans + 1 ps fan. The 80 gig SE WD drive I have seems louder than the raptor, though, if that helps.

It's not especially loud, but it is there. It's a low-volume, yet high-pitched whine. Sometimes late at night when ambient noise is very low, the noise is very pulsating, loud, quiet, loud, quiet. A steady pulse.

The new ones are 74GB but the 36 GB version will be updated with fluid dynamic bearings (no whine) and faster seek times however the model # will stay the same (if history repeats itself)
meaning it will be harder to tell if you are getting the updated version of the 36GB raptor. I suppose you could look for the lower seek time (4.?ms).

Anyone got any dates on the new fluid bearing ones?

I never noticed a whine, but, I did notice that it was louder than my other two drives.

No dates.
Quote from StorageReview.com

"74-gigabyte capacity - perhaps the most significant improvement is the migration to a two-platter flagship design. WD also plans to introduce a revised single-platter, 37 GB unit, though perhaps not until most WD360GD units sell through the market."
