Issue is entirely AMD's fault, their RAID controller and drivers combined with Win7 64 equaled total data loss on the 2TB volume. Thats really an unacceptable failure point on mature technology. Drive failure is to be expected, controller or driver problems are not.

Expected failure or unexpected failure, that's what backups are for. The fact that you didn't have one, is not AMD's fault.

Perhaps you'll learn from this incident.

Edit: I'm not perfect either. In the 90s, I lost a 1GB HDD with some useful stuff on it. That's when I learned to back up. I used Norton Ghost for the longest time with XP. Since I'm moved to Win7, I use some external HDDs to backup now. I keep stuff in triplicate, at the very least.

What software solution for backups? I have the storage part under control just want to find something more simple and automated for daily/weekly backups.

I just use WHS2011 to back up to my 2tb drive. It has it's own built in which IMO is easy and does the job. For my crit. files, I just copy and paste 1x/wk, some times less. My crit files are pretty static and I only add more stuff around this time (tax season). Pictures/home movies are all part of my whs2011 back up and those are set nightly through the OS.

EDIT: There's prob a more efficient way to do things, but for me this works and I always have a copy of my important files, and more importantly to my wife, the home vids and pictures are backed up and easily accessible. Plus, I don't have to deal with any type of RAID, mainly because have no idea how to set 1 up etc.

Was bothered by one Newegg user review that said it choked when trying to record multiple channels with their HTCP and something like the Silicon Dust HD Prime. Not sure if this is true, but if so, no deal for me. Also if you plan on using for a DVR drive in your Windows 7 Media Center, backing up is not always practical and not all recordings can even be backed up and played again.

It would also be a good idea to let your drives acclimate for 2-3 days if they got winter-cold in transport. Srsly.

Just put em in the microwave for 2 minutes on defrost. Should clear things right up.

Edit: Forgot the all-important

I bought 2 of them and have them in a stripe and they work just fine. Its been about a month so far and they are in use a fair amount as they hold the mp3's and games I have. I don't know why people fret so much about dead drives based on a few opinnions.. typically the people that are pissed off comment more than those that are satisfied.. without actually seeing real statistics on failure quantity vs the volume produced its all a bunch of conjecture. I figure since these have a longer warranty they probably used better air handlers where these are produced then again that is an assumption.
