over 90% of regular ide drives die within 3yrs.
That is the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard. I would say you could actually flip the number and say 10% die within 3yrs and you would be way closer to the truth than 90%.

Sounds like a born again SCSI snob hatched in the early days of the Mac. A true SCSI snob will never admit that EIDE caught up to and in some ways surpassed SCSI, especially if you factor in the important requirement of reasonable cost.

Yes I noticed that...and they don't specifically say oem or not, even though they picture just the drive and I believe mention 3 years warranty only.

Unless you have the P4C800. I know at least two guys that bought this board without knowing that both GbE and SATA are running off the PCI bus, lol.
These wouldnt be the boards on the Dell 8300 you're talking about are they?
I have no idea what board the 8300 has.

I was looking around for these drives and it seems that most of the sub $200 are the oem model.

The retail price (for the retail drive) is $299. To find a retail one under $200 would mean a 33% discount on a new and what I would imagine is a popular item, so I don't think it's really expectable.

I think to get the OEM drive for less than half the retail is great. Considering you dont really need the box for anything, except maybe selling it. I conceed that the 3 year warranty isnt as great as the 5 year, but at least it is covered for 3 years, and I assure you in 3 years, hard drives will have come a long way. (Just look at the rate they're going now).

Don't worry, I'm not attacking anyone, just putting things in perspective. I wish I had the money to buy this...I now have something to save up for.

The warranty for these OEM drives should still be 5yrs. After all that's what WD advertises, and more importantly, these are the drives that system builders buy, instead of the retail ones.

i have a pair of these drives in RAID 0 and let me tell you a little about their performance: THESE THINGS ARE FRIGGIN' FAST! forget upgrading your chip or RAM or any of that stuff. these drives boot up so darn fast and progs load so quick it is crazy. superquiet, supercool, and a 5 year warranty so you can't go wrong. i highly recommend it =)

I bought one from Googlegear when they first had them available and when I run the serial on WD's site it lists it as 5 years of warranty if I recall correctly. Can anyone else confirm that these OEM Raptors do in fact have 5 year warranty just as their retail counterparts do?

For those with Dell coupons, Dell has the Raptor OEM on site now if you don't mind the wait.

Damn...too bad I used my 15% coupon this morning.

with the 15% S&P and my 10% whole order and with tax it comes out to $130.28 shipped. I guess I could sell the 30gb HD that comes with the comp for $30, which would bring the cost of this to $100. SO TEMPTING!! Dont think I have the $100 to spare though...damn.

I'm such a nice guy

I've applied two coupons to my Dell Small Business account which I won't/don't need. After selecting two of the $156.95 raptors, this is how my total broke down:

313.90 (2x156.95)
-87.10 discounts
0.00 shipping
17.58 tax
-------------
$244.38

I won't be using the two 15% off coupons before they expire (6/15 and 6/18), so I'll extend a helping hand to the AT community that has helped me tremendously and give this deal to whomever wants it. LMK.

Just ordered a Raptor for my Dimension 4600 from Dell SB. $121 shipped. ($133 - 15% + 7.5% tax)

If anyone is looking for a separate deal on a Serial ATA cable, I bought an Adaptec cable fromProvantage. Prices start at $3.93 and shipping is $4.95 (per cable).

HyperMicro has it for $139, and if you mention StorageReview.com you get free shipping too. Apparently they are based in IL and so they don't charge tax for CA residents.
