We are losing an entire generation of men to video games

I refused to play WOW after what I saw Warcraft and Starcraft did to me.

Men aged 21 to 30 worked 12 percent fewer hours in 2015 than in 2000. The percent of young men who worked zero weeks over the course of a year doubled in that period, to an alarming 15 percent. Those working hours were largely replaced by gaming, and fully 35 percent of young men now live with their parents or other close relatives, up from 23 percent in 2000. Their unemployment rate jumped by 10 percent.

A huge proportion of young men are simply dropping out of the workforce and becoming PlayStation’s willing slaves. The numbers are in a National Bureau of Economic Research study and in an essay by economist Erik Hurst of the Booth School of Economics at the University of Chicago.

Through my teenage and early college years I was hooked but now even when I try to play a game, I get over it in about an hour. It kinda sucks because I actually am interested in the game and the story, but I can't get myself to sit for more than 1-2 hour session.

Pretty much the same here. I tell myself I don't have time and I fantasize about being so rich that I wouldn't have to work and could game all day. But the truth is, once you learn how unimportant and superficial video games are, the deep appeal fades. I can't have them as a way of life if I know that way is empty. Nothing wrong with a few sugary snacks here and there, but you can't live on them.

Pretty much the same. I have the money to buy games now, but not really the time. Being a responsible adult is tough some times, but it beats living with the parents.

Used to love FPS games from my 20's into mid to late 30's. Now 42 years young. Loved the BF series the most. I bought BF1 the day it came out and didn't play a minute of it. Haven't missed gaming a bit, but it could happen. It is such a time sucker. Now with a GF I probably won't pick up again, unless the relationship gets dull.

I was pretty much addicted to video games through high school and college, but my interest evaporated sometime in my 20's-30's. I'm not really sure why... I still play from time to time as an alternative to watching TV.

The article touches a bit on why:

Consider what the future holds for men whose 20s get sucked into the maw of the Xbox. The 20s are when we pick — and begin to gain mastery in — a career.

If these men intend to start their lives at 30, they’re going to find themselves at a huge disadvantage. They’re going to be sullen when told to start at the bottom, when peers they knew in school are already in management positions.

And if you go into your 40s still playing games, then you turn into Mayne:

Maybe they’ll turn down work and pick up the gaming remote. Maybe they’ll drift toward their 40s without ever really launching.

Women usually don’t go for men who are less successful than they are, so gaming is going to cause a surge in dissatisfaction among members of both sexes. Unemployed, or underemployed, men residing at Casa de la Mama whose major life skill involves pretend shoot-em-ups are not going to impress many ladies.

This sounds like a cart before horse problem: perhaps these man are playing so much because there are so few jobs? In this case, we should be grateful for the games, because without them these people would likely be shooting up real people instead of virtual ones.

Hard core gamer found.

Actually we have tons of open jobs in S.C. +60K. A lot of them require skills that the workers don't have.

I raided in WoW for about 5 years into like 1-2am. It was fun, but I quit after friends left the server. That's what it was really all about. You can't look back and say it was time wasted when you can admit there were good times.

ya, i agree the cart before the horse thing may be going on there a bit, gaming has been around much longer, im almost 50 and still love to play video games. i played wow for 12 or so years, along with countless other games. i even got degrees in game design theory and 3d animation to work in the industry. i managed to hold down the same joob for the past 19 years, raise 3 kids and get married/ divorced in the course of that time as well. hell, in my teens and 20s i played games daily and managed to keep a job and meet some women as well. there is a way to game and have a productive life as well.

Likely this, at least for those referenced in the article.

I play games, am almost 40, and don't now, nor ever did, have any of the problems mentioned. Always have worked, married w/kids, do stuff with the family, make fairly good money, and so on. I also have adult friends that are the same. We play when we can, usually on weekends, but all have normal lives. At least in my case it just takes the place of other somewhat useless forms of entertainment, such as tv.

D&D sure didn't help my grades but it kept me off the roads and, 35 years later, we still laugh at some of the shenanigans. Would not trade 'em.

WoW was a BITCH for me to quit. I just get incredibly competitive when it comes to games - simply put I'm either the best or strive to be the best. At my peak I was the most geared hunter on my server. Shortly after I was starting to go to my University after taking 2 years in community college for the basics. It was easy to keep up raids and playing WoW while in community college... but in University I had to stay in dorms, and suddenly I had the option of hanging out with drunk college girls or staying in my dorm room playing WoW.

I quit cold turkey less than 6 months in, sold my account for ~$1000 to some dude in China and never looked back. Since then I've graduated and just don't have time for those types of games. The only one I ever seem to play anymore is DOTA because each game begins and ends within a reasonable time frame, and playing more often doesn't get you better items.

That said - now ~7 years later my job takes up all my time. If my job doesn't take all my time my spouse does. If my spouse doesn't then I'm eating, drinking, cleaning up, mowing, other chores.

If I even have 45 minutes to sit around I usually just /shrug because most games take longer to play.

Meh. I play games more now than I did when I was young, and I played a lot back them. I play mostly at work though. Spent 3 hours playing Daiblo at work last night, lol
