We Could Be On The Brink of Nuclear War

Apparently I may get a chance to experience the end of civilization.

The Trump administration made a clear break Thursday with diplomatic efforts to talk North Korea out of a nuclear confrontation, bringing the United States and its Asian allies closer to a military response than at any point in more than a decade.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that 20 years of trying to persuade North Korea to abandon its nuclear program had failed and that he was visiting Asia “to exchange views on a new approach.”

Soon after Tillerson’s remarks, in a sign of mounting tensions, the North Korean Embassy held an extraordinary news conference in Beijing to blame the potential for nuclear war on the United States while vowing that its homegrown nuclear testing program will continue in self-defense.

North Korea has amassed a sizable nuclear stockpile and appears at the brink of being able to strike the U.S. mainland and American allies in Asia. The rising threat from the isolated military dictatorship has prompted the Trump administration to begin assessing its options for how to respond and serves as an early test for how the president will confront an increasingly volatile international situation.

Trump is gonna have serious difficulty dealing with his North Korean counterpart. And I dont mean cuz hes president, I mean cuz he's arrogant and ignorant and thinks the whole world revolves around him. Thats gonna be trouble.

Those are the kind of dumb selfish assholes who would nuke each other out of spite.

Why don't we use the nukes we have?

also we really should know if they work or not. all those eggheads with supercomputers saying 'blah blah blah our simulations say our stockpile is safe', well shit theres no way to check the sims unless we set them off. hell we're building new ones anyway, better clear out old stock.

This is not an argument for war, but what lies beneath NK's motivations, not Trump at least for now.

It comes down to this. Why does Kim want nukes, why does he threaten with them? Given his insulated dysfunctional view of the world which he apparently believes is envious of him and wants his magnificence destroyed- the West's entire will bent on this objective- because he will otherwise rise to world dominion. Remember he was raised to believe this and had no experience to counter his upbringing.

At this rate Kim will have the means to do more than make threats, he can carry them out in half a dozen years or less.

Perhaps people view this differently and they're right- who knows"

So-

You are President now and you have the resources of the US at your disposal. Given all that you know about Kim, his upbringing, his reactions to diplomacy and threat, what would you do to safeguard ourselves and our allies? Keep in mind that Kim is a potential ticking nuke.

Can't be that hard to assassinate him and make it look like an accident, can it?

I did some research on this is and I actually don't think Trump will do anything to the DPRK. Jong Un has already demonstrated they have the ability to hit anything within 15,000km with the UNHA-9. The only reason the US hasn't "confirmed" the ability to Nuke D.C. is the North Koreans have yet to demonstrate a Reentry vehicle. Other nations who trade with the DPRK have long demonstrated that ability and the North Koreans could easily source the technology from Iran or even China. They could also use publicly available knowledge on RVs to design a working model of their own, although they would be taking a big risk of failure.

Trump has likely been told that if he attacks North Korea, Trump Tower itself might be turned into a crater. We all know Trump has no stomach for conflict with powerful people, he would cut and run if his own life was threatened. So... I wouldn't worry too much about nuclear war.

I think it's very unlikely any side will try anything, nothing to be gained.

It's a good excuse for the US to deploy a bunch of troops and weapons systems to south east asia and piss off china though.

Sometimes it's uncomfortable to come to the conclusion that nothing can really be done except try and wait them out while developing technologies to limit their ability to harm us and hoping that they collapse from within.

The good news on this is that North Korea is small enough and compact enough that from my understanding boost phase intercept is a viable solution to the threat they pose to the US and Japan. (South Korea not so much) If we could accomplish that then we would largely neutralize North Korea's threat absent their longstanding ability to engage in a war with South Korea and avoid the destabilizing effects of mid-course guidance BMD.

I think by and large countries seek out to develop a nuclear weapons program to deter any potential strong arming from other nations. No one sane will engage another nuclear armed nation because of the potential extinction of the human race.

In what situation could he use nukes against another nation where it does not result in him being vaporized as well ?

The result of nuclear war is the human race going extinct. A fantasy of a post-apocalyptic Rick Grimes with a rifle on the shoulder going out and making it through the disaster is not happening. It will be vaporization in the initial blasts, incineration from the blast wave, blindness from the glare leading to death, death from a lethal dose of radiation within days or from a lesser dose within a longer period and having escaped all that; starvation after the food supply dries up from nuclear winter and radiation contamination.

A nuclear attack against NK would have an effect on other nuclear armed nations. Once the realization comes in that Trump is a complete madman and has just nuked another country, the other nuclear countries will go on alert. I don't see it as being so simple as just nuking one country and expecting other nations to think 'Oh, that's fine, it was just NK', given the unhinged and bizarre behaviour of Trump, other countries would see him as a grave threat following such an attack.

I have my doubts he could initiate an unprovoked nuclear attack without someone saying enough is enough of this imbecile and removing him. Maybe a naive hope, but I'd like to think there are sane and rational people involved in the process from command to action taking place that would stop what could result in the end of civilization.

Trump and kim jong um are a very dangerous matchup, probably the one most likely to lead to nuclear exchange ever.

Even without nukes, Seoul is roughly 40 miles from the DMZ and has literally thousands of conventional missles, etc aimed at it. The conventional wisdom is that Seoul would be completely obliterated within 45 minutes of the start of a war. My daughter and soon to be born grandchild live there and our glorious leader's provocations scare the crap out of me.

On a lighter note, Trump's actions pretty much guarantee the Nobel Peace Prize for his successor.

I don't see KJU reigning for the duration of a long, natural life without a nuclear war happening at some point. Hopefully his regime is toppled before it happens.

Why are people so hard set on changing the political regime in this tiny country that hasn't attacked anybody in half a century. Because we can't invade them without huge casualties and possible nuclear retaliation?

People need to check their priorities. This is the exact same logic that Bush used to start war with Iraq... how did that turn out again? If anybody represents a world threat and needs a regime change it is the United States of Trump.
