revenue per http://www.usgovernmentrevenue.com/ for 2011: 4460 billion
expenditures per http://www.usgovernmentspending.com: 2900 billion
inflation adjustment per http://www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi: 3900 billion
us population 1998 http://www.npg.org/facts/us_historical_pops.htm 270,298,524

inflation adjusted spending per capita 1998: ~$14500
multiplied by current pop clock per US census: 4489 billion

seems he's right, if per capita spending were brought back to 1998 levels, we'd be breaking even.

Thats total revenue all forms of govt take in. Fed, state and local.

The feds only took in about 2.2 trillion and 1.9 was borrowed.

I wonder if any one other than Reid and Boehner (or more accurately, their staffs) know what's in the bill?

All this budget talk is fluff. All it takes in another crazy president, make believe weapons of mass destruction, and more unfunded war(s), then who cares about budgets or national debt. Republicans care not about numbers. They only care about making kills on social issues. And making sure they win elections, no matter what it takes. Mastering the craft of suppressing voter turnout on the other side.

This Republican act that they are soooo concerned about the national debt is like me all concerned about the color of my neighbors garbage cans. They like spending money just as much as any democrat ever did. They just rather spend working class tax payers money on their perks and on their wall street buddies. That need is a never ending concern to republicans. No amount is too high to meet that goal. And then you figure in the payback.

that was also total fed/state/local spending, apparently

1998 fed was 1653, which would be 2200 inflation adjusted
so about 8150 per capita, which is 2.53 trillion.

so we'd be ~300 billion short

You can't use 1998. That was at the height of the Internet bubble.
so? federal spending wasn't that affected by the internet bubble. revenues, yes. spending, probably not.

Right, it wouldn't EXACTLY balance the budget, but we'd be a lot closer, as soon as revenues returned to normal all we'd have to do is some minor cutting and then we'd be balanced.

To be honest I'm not happy either. Republicans massive tax cuts (dividends, capital gains, inheritance), bailouts, massive corporate subsidies, handouts to Pharma and the military industrial complex etc all need to be addressed and not by ripping off seniors who have already been looted of their 15% paid in their whole life. Our nations fiscal health depends on it. And I don't want my kids paying wealthy treasury holders for the rest of their lives and getting nothing back for their taxes. We were almost balanced with Clinton and these assholes are just fucking this country long term.

zebes we were balanced because the economy grew, not because the Clinton did anything to reduce spending.

Lets call it a good start and get back to work.

I don't think you're even keeping up with the yearly increase to the interest on the debt. Do you fathom how infinitesimal of a budget battle this was?

Take a look at the big picture on yearly spending.

Deceptive cartoon is deceptive. The $33 billion crumbs should be roughly six times bigger than shown to be at scale to the pie. Otherwise, carry on.

I fully understand the problem. And given that these tiny cuts were labeled as draconian by the democrats, I think this is a good starting point. If think the general public will soon find out that this little piece that was lopped off was not draconian. This is a very good and serious first step to solving the problem.

It is still a tiny fraction when we are talking tens of billions vs thousands of billions.

LOL - The GOP took the Democrats to the cleaners and the "progressives" are saying the GOP caved.

Lets see,
-The largest cut in US history.
-Guaranteed Vote in the Senate on Obamacare repeal.
-Guaranteed Vote in the Senate on Planned Parenthood.
-The expansion of the IRS has been defunded.
-Mandatory audits of the financial takeover bill.

No, the GOP didn't blink.

GOP got a little which is a good thing, their religous base won't be happy though.
