I'm just glad they recovered so quickly from the industry wide shortage of flash after everyone who said they were waiting for $1/gb bought drives </s>

Any interested parties might want to read at least Anand's review summary of this drive before buying (and, perhaps the rest of it as well): http://www.anandtech.com/show/4346/ocz-agility-3-240gb-review/10

Remember, that was published over a year ago, when the price of the drive was $420. It's now $120. I think any concerns mentioned there can be set aside once you consider the price. Here's Anand's summary:

OCZ's Agility 3 is a mixed bag of performance. For typical desktop workloads and light usage, the Agility 3 looks a lot like a Vertex 3. It's only when you start mixing in data that's not easily compressed/deduped that the Agility misbehaves. As a general boot/application drive I'm pretty confident in the Agility 3's abilities, however those of you who work with (more than just play back) a lot of photos, video, music and file archives will want to spend the extra on the Vertex 3.

Great "First SSD" for people. Big enough to replace a HD as a boot drive for many people.

But... this is NOT the first drive to break the $0.50/GB mark. That would be the OCZ Vertex Plus R2 120GB drives sold by 1saleaday, for $60 + $5 ship, with a $10 rebate. $55 net for a 120GB drive is LESS than $0.50.

Edit: I bought three of them, and so far, they're working fine. They are not as high performance as a 2nd-gen SandForce (even one with async NAND), but they're still "SSD speed". Plus, no SandForce bugs.
(Still have to RMA my ~$239 Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240GB drive, which I thought was such a great deal at $1/GB.)

Just remember, "it keeps getting faster all the time, and it keeps getting cheaper all the time".

I'd still hang on to my $120 until an M4 or 830 deal came around. Sure, the OCZ drive is faster than a rotational, but both the Crucial and Samsung offerings are superior and getting cheaper by the week.

At this rate, SSDS will be cheaper than hard drives in a year (albeit always 1/4 of the space too). I'm looking for a 2TB Black and its ridiculous that they are still as pricey as they are with no real price drops in sight.

finally. you would have to imagine, eventually, sdd's will sell for MUCH cheaper then hdd's. so many fewer parts and nothing moves.... I would bet 64GB ssd's will be $19.99 in just another year or so and that will be commonplace.

and i think once all sdd's hit that .50 barrier, the storage industry will explode again. people have been holding off for years now... first waiting for ssd's and now still waiting for pre flood hdd prices. theres been a huge lul in storage for the computer industry. its time to blow that bubble up again

It's kind of wierd. USB flash drives, have hit $30 for 64GB. So in that respect, USB flash drives are cheaper than SSDs, for the 64GB capacity point.

But then you look at 128GB SSDs, and 128GB flash drives, and the flash drives are more expensive, for the most part!

Go figure. Something has to give, eventually.

I'm hoping to see entry-level SSDs drop so low that everyone can afford one. If that means 64GB for $20, or 128GB for $50, I'm all for it.

TBH, prices aren't that far off already for the 12xGB sizes, like I already posted, the 1saleaday.com deal was $55 AR for a 120GB SSD. I jumped on that deal!

well thats only a matter of time... and has been that way for years. but i think we really are seeing the freefall in prices we need. .50/gig is where people start buying

This is speculation on my part

But wouldn't the ssds have a more expensive controller and thus be part of the higher price for small ssds. That combine with more expensive flash (so you are guaranteed higher endurance) and higher validation. (Since SSDs are dealing with the OS it has to work or you will have to replace it under warranty.)

Flash Drives on the other hand can be made out of cheaper stuff since they are not mission critical. It is only in the larger storage sizes that they get expensive since for 128GB you need 4 32GB channels which means either a really thick flash drive since you are doing dual layer pcb or a drive that is at least 3 inches long so it has space to place the 4 flash channels.

Not much of a cut but right now the egg has 15% off all WD hard drives, so its 147.48 right now, over $25 off! If you have the free shoprunner (which you should if you are a good deal hunter) then its only $144.49, buy it now imo.

I'm seriously thinking that deal over, but I really don't NEED the storage, I just want to move a 1.5TB drive to backup duty and gain 500GB by buying the WD 2TB.
Its hardly worth the $$ to gain 500GB, so I'm holding off for now. Anyways, I hope the AT'ers who get in on this deal have good luck with the drives.
