Popeyes Chicken is amazing, love their cajun seasoning. Would take it over most diner fried chicken. Their popcorn shrimp and sweet tea is also fabulous. only con is that they are freak'in expensive compared to KFC...

Popeye's chicken is ok, but it is a bit expensive. Not as good as Church's but better than KFC IMO. But they have excellent sides, especially red beans & rice.

Popeye's runs a lot of coupons. Check the website and the paper that comes with the junk mail.

No Popeye's within a hundred miles. I may have to pick up some Bojangles on my way home today.

is 2nd tier to Bojangles...you should already know this.

You, sir, are amongst the elite: Not a Popeye's around to tarnish the fried chicken landscape so easily dominated by your local Bojangles.

1/4 white, fries, free sweet tea. fuck yes!

I remember during Katrina, they were interviewing local residents about the destruction. A news station asked the lady "What are residents doing about the destruction of all the Churches? Interviewee's response was "Doesn't matter that much, most of us all gets our chicken at Popeye's anyway".

lulz awesome!
I decided I would try this place out last night.
It was meh.
Got the 3 piece chicken with red beans and rice or whatever as a side.
It was not terrible but I expected more.
Something else a lot better to try if I want to give it another go?

I did not mean to imply that Popeye's is superior to Bojangle's, but it is different. Bojangle's lacks the bite of Popeye's cajun spices, and dirty rice doesn't quite match up to red beans & rice.

Also, while there may be no Popeye's to "tarnish the fried chicken landscape", there's a KFC a stone's throw away from my local Bo's... if that doesn't lower the culinary standard, I don't know what would.

Yes, KFC is much worse for sure. I feel sorry for you.

All of the Popeye's chicken that I have had, though, is completely bland and tasteless, tbh.

I've tried them in various regions of the country--as they are everywhere and one's fried chicken addiction easily gives in to desperation--and I haven't experienced a Popeye's franchise that is not filthy, poorly managed, with old, dry, bland chicken. So in my experience, Popeye's is consistently poor.

Now, I have also been to several Bojangle's, and is quite true that timing is everything. The heavenly fries can either be terribad or godly. The chicken is almost always moist and piping hot, though, and incredibly flavorful. I think I was spoiled with (what used to be, at least) the crown jewel of the franchise--the one on Western Blvd in Raleigh--constantly busy. Sometimes the tea can be overpowering, but it's usually quite good.
I've even found the occasional feather on my chicken at Bo, but that's all part of the charm in my eye.
And the dirty rice is a bit too "slimy" for my taste, but it's not bad. It's way better than Church's version, though. I do like Popeye's RB&R.

basically, I was raised on mostly Bojangle's and Chik Fil-A. I was spoiled, I guess, but nothing else comes close; though I have a special place in my heart for Church's. They mostly disappeared back home, but they are everywhere out here on the west coast. I have Church's and Popeye's both within less than a mile from me. I've been to Popeye's once, Church's maybe 6 or 7 times. Church's is almost always out of spicy chicken come dinner time. Plus, they seem more busy than Popeye's on a regular basis. :\

Being well versed in southern cooking, I can tell you that the proper way to eat fried chicken is warm...not piping hot That's how they do it in the Louisiana's. They'll make batches of fried chicken, cover it with cloth, and people at at it all day.

Texas has a chain called Bill Miller's B-B-Q, I like it even better than Church's, as far as fast food fried chicken goes.

Oh, I agree. I think it's hotter at Bo's b/c they are constantly making it and a new batch is fresh out all the time. Again, depends on which one you go to.

The Popeye's I've been to, it looks as though it's been sitting out for a few days. blech.

I wonder how many people remember Hardee's Fried Chicken? I put that above all others except Bojangles. It was actually the Roy Rogers recipe that they bought. mid-late 80's I think. They made a big stink out of it and went after KFC hard with the big taste test advertising and such. it really was better than KFC (not hard to accomplish).

I believe this is when KFC introduced their "extra tasty crispy" recipe--to compete with Hardee's. ('twas KFC's first real attempt at making fried chicken)

On second thought...who remembers Roy Roger's fried chicken?

I would go to Church's chicken if I didn't fear for my life going there. It seems every Church's is located in really bad parts of town.

All the Popeyes near me are pretty clean, and I feel safe eating there. I also like the fried chicken at Pollo Campero. It's Latin flavor fried chicken but it tastes lot like fried chicken you find in Korea and other parts of Asia. The spices are very similar.

The chicken they use in the US are all giant mutant chicken. If you get fried chicken outside of the US, the pieces are lot smaller since the chickens are usually small natural chicken.

Piggly Wiggly has really good fried chicken. They also have fried chicken livers. Kroger fried chicken is inedible. Publix fried chicken is average but they usually have good combo deals with sides.

The Korean style fried chicken that I've always had has been way over-fried--it's like gnawing on rocks. and is somewhat...bland. and it's mostly tenders, right? usually boneless.

granted, I don't have a lot of experience with it. When I was still in Chicago, a chicken place opened up down the street. It was this Korean dude and I ended up talking to him for some time and he told me how he grew up with this (his family was in the restaurant biz, I think), and the history and culture of Korean chicken prep. It was OK...but if he claims that his stuff was so representative, and if it was--I'll have to pass.
I've had it before at another place, and it was worse (dry--but that's on the cook).

and yeah, the Purdue chickens are way to prevalent over here. I'd like to see that shit go away. Those chickens can't even walk, it's so fucked up.

I seem to remember Winn Dixie had decent Fried Chicken. The only thing we have around here is Safeway. It's...OK.

Fortunately, Church's isn't in a bad part of town, here

I'd love to try Pollo Campero, and with those other latino chicken joints that are supposed to be everywhere, but are sadly lacking in Berzerkeley. Pollo Loco, for example.

he's right, though. The standard US Purdue designed chicken is an absolute freak of nature. They have been selected for breast size and are fed hormones. by the time they are a few months old, they are some 75% or something larger than they should be. they can't walk. they just in their packed cages and writhe on the ground.

real chickens are quite small.

hormones are illegal here.

I know that most breeds are top heavy. I am just saying that I see huge pieces and small pieces of chicken when I get KFC. Sometimes I see way too small pieces so everyone here calls them pigeon pieces.
