This is shameful. This has probably already been posted, but I felt the need to do it anyway.

I love this country dammit, but we can't seem to get anything right. Terrorist attacks on our soil, wars, Katrina, oil spill, healthcare reform, financial reform, meltdown, etc. etc. etc. Where does it end? If we tried to go the moon we'd probably end up crashing into the sun at this point (allow me a little creative license with that analogy).

This country is being split apart, the identity and culture torn to shreds. We're nothing but sycophants of the world right now, destroying ourselves, our economy, our health and now our environment. This isn't some hippy, tree-hugging bullshit.

What will it take for all us to finally rally together and figure this out? Another 9/11? Another WWII?

Apologies in advance for the particularly emotive style of this post. While we all sit here and bicker and moan about such minutiae like not getting equal media coverage for conservative issues that no one cares about, our beaches are being destroyed. Our economy, our culture, our global competitiveness and then our beaches.

What can be done to truly reform this country? Forget politicians. Forget parties. What can we do? At some point you just have to acknowledge that it's too damn broken and you need to start near zero and rebuild.

wow... obama's admin really fucked this up... you're doing a helluva job, barry...

but since he did tell some of his advisors to "plug the damn hole" i guess he's really doing all he can and is totally blameless... http://www.cnbc.com/id/37350986

If you think this country is only being recently torn apart, you have not lived long enough.

I'll give you that, but that's hardly the point. I think it's ok to make mistakes, but only if we learn and improve from them. We can't seem to do that, or perhaps we never did. Regardless, the ramifications of this basic failure seems, anecdotally at least, to be getting to a point where we will no longer be able to recover. As other countries become more competitive, our place at the top will be compromised and we won't be able to pick up after a spill (no pun intended).

So, if this is in fact history repeating itself, then that's just further proof of our anemia.

I'm assuming you're trolling, but if not then thank you for providing another manifestation of this illness that keeps holding us all back.

Texas and all the other red states need to split off and form their own shithole of a country, while the rest of us move on.

you are just a whining, trolling, repetetive posting bitch...

What exactly is it that you think he can personally do? The only companies with the kind of equipment needed to plug the leak are already on the job.

The comparisons with Katrina that some have made are idiotic. That was a failure in logistics and management of equipment, personnel, and resources that the government already had. This is a technical issue that requires the resources and expertise that very few people in the world have.

so how was katrina not a failure of things that were already, or should have already, been in place? there were plenty of busses in no before the hurricane, why wasn't there an evacuation plan? the updating of the berms had been funded and the money was diverted... the dems that ran the state and city were total failures...

i'm only flavoring this with dems vs. whomever else since this is p&n... in p you attache grief to the party in power...

but i do think an innovative idea would be to "plug the damn hole" with a mixture of all the printed copies of the healthcare bill mixed with bo's 100+ czars... but i'm not really an engineer so it's just a suggestion...

There is nothing that can done. That's the problem with a massive one-size-fits-all federal bureaucracy. People in a town of 300 in South Dakota are treated exactly the same as those in LA. States laws are a quaint reminder of the past when New York might differ from Kansas in how they handle problems. We're now all just automatons in the federal machine and people are lashing out to one side or the other. It's a polarizing environment when you tell 300 million people that they have to all be the same.

The increase of narcissism is to blame for a lot of the current problems in the world not just the USA. The idea that what I want is a right and something I need , what effects me directly is all that matters.

The way people think now:
Oil in the water ? Thats terrible. Someone should do something as long as it isn't me. Look at all those sick animals damaged by the oil . Whats for dinner ?

Katrina ? so sad what happened there. I don't live there though so time to get on with more important things , I need to set the DVR to record my shows for this week.

Mortgage ? I want a new car but I can't pay for it, wait a minute, I don't want a new car, I deserve a new car, I need it. If I can't afford it I will just take out another loan on the home and get the car I have a right to have. Those banks made me sign the papers , they had thugs and guns pointed at me and I couldn't read, and it was in a dark room, so what if they don't get their money, I got my car and I needed it .

7 soldiers died in Iraq, sorry for the families. I need to call John and see when we can go play a round of golf.

We should be ashamed that the "progressives" wont let us build nuclear power plants in the United States.

I'm not sure what can be done to prevent things like this. Granted, it was a failure of government, but without even the nominal government oversight this sort of disaster would almost certainly have happened long before this. I don't really see how Democrat versus Republican really has anything to do with this either, other than Democrats generally being in favor of not drilling anywhere near the USA. That might save the Gulf, but then again maybe not; there are Russian and Chinese companies also planning to sink wells in Gulf waters, and neither of those countries are known for their shining environmental policies.

I do think this shows a burning need to get more for our tax dollar though. We have a massive federal government that has been shown to do nothing but generate paper trails and provide safety awards just before disaster. Whether it is government-based or industry-based, we really need an effective quick reaction team at least mandated by government, together with real, effective oversight. We may also have to accept a moratorium on deep water wells until we develop better tools to handle these inevitable catastrophes.

The voice of reason and tolerance weighs in!

OP, here's why we're in a mess. This post sums it up.

Hey now.. this 'progressive' works in the nuclear industry.. I assure you most of the professionals at the lab lean left as well...

Fools who bought into the fear don't like nuclear... That being said, we really need to move away from centralized power production and only use it (when it is clean and well managed, CANDU anyone?... /end shameful plug) as backup during peak times.

if California kept all of the money that t sent to the fed it would have no problems. We would be bad ass and export to the rest of you sucking up even more money.
