Wearing shorts in the winter

I noticed some fat (chubby) people like to wear shorts in the winter. I think their higher body fat percentage helps insulates them from the cold. There must be some guy thinking, I have super resistance to cold, but really it's, my fatness insulates me well.

When I was in university, I use to see this guy standing at the bus stop every day in Bermuda shorts and a Hawaiian shirt. Didn't matter if it was +30c, -30c, snowing, raining. I recall him being a heavy set dude but not fat. Always thought he was nuts.

I sometimes wear shorts indoor in winter but never outdoors unless it's +10 or hotter like in spring when things are starting to warm up.

By winter, I meant the season that has cold and snow.

i will wear shorts 40+ if i will be out running.

50+, and sunny does it for me. I'll have a sweatshirt on or a light jacket but I'd be in shorts year round if I could get away with it. Having said that, 50+, sunny and windy can be a whole different story. I like the freedom of shorts but I don't like freezing my ass off.

when its been cold long enough you get acclimated to it. unless the wind is up or there is precip, 50F easily short weather, particularly if a decent jacket on. heat transfer through legs about the lowest in the body.

I wear shorts and a T-shirt w/o a jacket down to ~45F in midwestern winters.
Will only bust out a light jacket if it gets to 40F.
Will only bust out the heavy stuff if it gets to 30F (or there is a lot of windchill).
Funny to see people pussying out with crazy winter gear in 60F weather.

lol other than for work I wear shorts roughly 350 or so days per year. We've had a couple mornings in the past couple weeks where it was about 55 degrees out and I decided to be a pussy and wear jeans or sweats when I walked the dogs, but other than that, shorts all the way.

Its not simply fatness insulating. Its Heat Generated By body - Heat lost to cold.

Heat generated is essentially calculated by metabolic levels. More muscle or more activity = more heat generated (that is why you sweat at the gym.) Now, fat can increase metabolism as well, but, not nearly to the same extent as muscle.

Heat loss is a function of surface area to mass ratio. More mass per surface area = less heat loss.


So, people who are both fat and also strong tend to have both high metabolism as well as low surface area to mass ratios, other people who can wear shorts comfortably in the cold are people who are "stout" or have short limbs, or many athletes who have insane metabolisms...

Watch NFL players in the snow, they dont bitch about how they are freezing their asses off, because they have the metabolism to keep themselves warm...

some people run at different temperatures.

my boyfriend is like a hundred pounds soaking wet, but he's always crazy warm... almost never sleeps under the covers and he'd wear shorts all year if he didn't have to wear a suit to work or deal with getting questions/criticisms for it any time we go out.

I live in NorCal - wet, rainy winter so far (thankfully). I saw a high school kid with his dad in Taco Bell yesterday in shorts. He was Asian - not fat either. Its not uncommon when its often 50-60 in the winter here to see guys in shorts with a hoodie or windbreaker.

I don't wear them in winter - but I do pretty much from about late March to early November. Mild enough climate.

I am 20 pounds more, and spent several years as competitive swimmer, so my metabolism is pretty high still, and I usually wear shorts year round except for the couple of times when it gets cold (cold being less then about 15 deg F)

My legs just don't get that cold so I'm in shorts 90% of the year. I'l' go out in shorts during the winter, but I'll have a long sleeve undershirt, t-shirt and hoodie for my upper body. Feels great. But I'm in the Central Valley, so it doesn't get that cold here, rarely under 30F very long anyways.
