Hello,

Does anyone know of any Dreamweaver equivalents for Linux distros?.
Have heard of NVU but wondered if there were any other web-authoring packages available for download for Linux.

Thank you.

Apologies if this post should really be in the Software - Apps folder, have only just noticed the folder after having posted :-(.

bluefish is okay from what I have heard... but nothing beats coding html by hand.

Bluefish and Quanta are the two big DW alternatives for Linux, but they're not clones. Both are aimed at coders looking for an efficient editing environment rather than providing a nice graphical interface. Try them out and see if they work for you. Bluefish is a bit sleeker and speedier, but last I checked it didn't have any kind of project management. Quanta has more features and is maybe more actively developed, though I found it a PITA to set up the first time. Still, I coded a decent sized PHP/SQL app with it last summer and found it quite usable.

If you have a copy of Dreamweaver 4.x or MX you can probably get it to work in Linux using Wine, or one of the commercial wine variants like Cross-Over. (same with many other applications like IE or MS Office and World of Warcraft)
(although I wouldn't buy most of the programs to try to use them in Linux, since they tend to be less reliable and usually you have to work to get them to work well)

Although in the longrun you'd probably be better off using Free software.

None of the MX 2004 series Macromedia products worked with Crossover the last time I checked. For DW at least, it sounded like it was just some kind of copy protection issue that should be worked around eventually. For the others I don't know. The older MX version works OK with Crossover (haven't tried Wine, but that should be OK too), though it's a bit fussy to set up and still has a couple of bugs.
