I'm lookin to setup a vpn server on my home pc. the problem is that i want to be able to login from any computer, without installing an vpn software. I've tried SSL Explorer, but it seems too finicky. anyone have any other recommendations?

You did not indicate what you need it for.

In many cases, a good overall solution is the use UltraVNC with encryption.

It let you control you PC from remote, or and use the file transfer module.

Ultr@VNC - Installation, and Settings

sorry to dig this thread out of its grave, but I got a few related questions.

First, I skimmed thru that side and still curious about the encryption part. Is opening the port 5900 and leaving firewall intact sufficient for security? I remember coming across a debate where one person pointed out having proper level of security with VNC is somewhat involving, which is why he recommends Radmin instead.

Secondly, UltraVNC is working quite well for me, but I would also like to find if there is a way to access the files on the fly (i.e. play video files without copying them first). This obviously doesnt work with VNC's remote desktop, so setting up VPN is the way to go?

may not be fast enough, but since I am only trying to acess my computer less than like 2 miles away from the point of connection, so its probably worth a shot

EDIT : hamachi might be what I am looking for, well if it doesnt work well then no biggie

Mmm, VPN is what he was after. You can RDP over VPN of course and if implemented right VPN is quite secure. Requires no additional software on either the client or server end provided you're running Windows.

Not sure if he's running Windows though. He refuses to say.

In case you are referring to me, I am using winxp pro SP2. Even if the connection speed isnt quite there to to play video files, even getting an access to mp3 files at home would be quite useful.

I'm looking at this and thinking....hmmmm....I'd never heard of MITM attacks referencing MS's Small Business Server 2003. But then I realized that, by default, SBS 2003 uses SSL for RDP connections. But I guess that some folks use RDP without SSL.

The setup I use for remote desktoping is as follows:

I have a crappy old HP computer running ubuntu hidden away under a couch, which functions as a ssh server. I have my firewall port forwarding port 22 to it. To connect, I open up putty, connect to my house & create a tunnel that forwards the remote desktop port from the ssh server to my desktop / htpc, depending on what I need. I then run remote desktop, and have it connect to 127.0.0.1:3388, but putty knows to send this to my house, and viola!, i'm connected.

quick version: putty connects to xx.xx.xx.xx:22, the router. Router forwards to xx.xx.xx.103, server. Remote desktop travels down connection to server, which forwards remote desktop to xx.xx.xx.105.

I was referring to original poster.

XP has a VPN client/server and remote desktop client/server built in. If he's running XP he doesn't need anything else.
