web browser safety on phone?

I was wondering how safe our web browsers are on our phone? So I'm running Android 1.5. I browse the web. I'll click a link on a msgboard. I go to that site. I'll clear my browser cache and then log in to my email or buy something online.

It would suck to have my accounts/identity stolen.

So, is it possible to get some virus/trojan/rootkit like how you would with a regular pc?

i dont think it will hurt any cell phones with browser if it does how come there is no antvirus apps?

So far as I know there haven't been any viruses on any smartphone OS. Android recently had some malware in the form of some apps that faked being a bank app which tried to steal your banking info.

Personally I won't do any ecommerce on my phones as I don't know how secure the browsers themselves are. If there is a dedicated app such as amazon or ebay I will but not in the browser itself. That's just personal though.

Jailbroken iPhones recently had a real virus attack, capturing ING account details in Holland from compromised handsets. The fix was easy, either 1 - Don't jailbreak or 2 - Change the root password, but still, it happened and it WILL happen again on this or any other smartphone platform.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple was actually behind the jailbroken iphone virus, LOL.

When I'm at work, some sites are blocked, so if I want to get an Amazon lightning deal, I would have to use my phone.

Even if I don't do banking, having my emails compromised would be just as bad.

yeah I thought about why the phones didn't have some malware scanner, but then it would eat up all the resources.

There is an AV app in the Android marketplace. Not sure if it really works or not.
