We're expecting our 2nd kid any day now. I was thinking of picking up a tablet for the wife to use while she has downtime with the baby. She would basically just be surfing with it. If it turns out good we might step up to a bigger tablet around the holidays once more tablets are available. She would probably want one that's bigger than the 7" ones.

if you have kids get an ipad, period. the app store has a lot more kid friendly apps than the android market

my older son who's almost 4 uses the ipad 2 more than i do. he spends more time on youtube than watching TV

Wow, that's a shitload of apple fanboy bullshit right there.

My 3 year old LOVES the apps I have on my android phone, and there are plenty of preschool age apps.

As far as flash goes, I take it you don't use the web browser that much then? NBC.com, ABC.com, hell, even sites like Kongregate are all flash-based examples, and work quite nicely on Android (and are porn free). For kids you have sites like poptropica and webkinz, etc which are flash based as well.

Since the Transformer is sold out, what's a better buy the Acer for $300 or the Dell for $200?

pulse news reader + Zite + google news makes me not have to visit each individual site

there are kids' apps in the market, but the app store has a lot more of them, better quality ones, in app purchasing to demo apps, the new ibooks is awesome for kids' books, and a lot more free ones

i rarely use the interactive content. most times i just scan the stories and never even read the full story.

real news is just paraphrased reuters and AP stories since AP is owned by a long list of news organizations as a kind of non-profit. for CNN the ipad CNN app is the bomb. HuffPo is good as well

the tech rags and blogs are just rephrased PR with the worst being the enterprise IT sites

Tablets should be $299-399 as the norm. They are essentially netbook, and this is the sweet spot

have you seen the Bills of Materials on them? ipad is around $250 in parts. Touchpad is $300. android tablets are about the same.

even if you take off $100 for wholesale discounts there is still no way you can sell a new tablet for $299 and make money

Don't get the Transformer if you want flash. Had one, returned it. Asus neglected to enable Hardware acceleration and flash movies play at 7-9FPS. XDA is working on a fix, and Asus has said they will fix it, but at the moment it is broken.

I just got a Viewsonic G Tablet, put CM 7 and am happy asa pig in sh!t.
So for $200, you can get a Tegra 2 based tablet with 10" screen and 16GB.

Avoid Archos tablets. The cheap ones are garbage and the expensive ones are only marginally better. Either way its never a good deal for the money. I recommend using the coupon in that other thread and getting a nice tablet. At the very least the Dell Streak 7 for 200. But thats actually the minimum I would go, and only if I just wanted to web browse, no saving files or playing HD movies.

I still like my Huawei Ideos S7. It's got a 1ghz Snapdragon, 512mb ram, 7" screen, great GPS and 8gb of user storage (only has some 300mb of app space, though). The S7 SLIM is the new model at Best Buy and it's thinner, lighter and has a capacitive screen.

They did pull the cellular radios from the Slim though, so no more calls/data.

I have the Asus Transformer and love it,the screen on it is fabulous, get it and if cost is an issue now, later you can think about getting the keyboard/ dock to go with it, perhaps as an Xmas gift.

Btw, a Tablet is an awesome Push Present, you're a good husband!

I'm going to sound like a fanboy as well - but overall I'd have to say Flash sucks on my rooted Nook color - and I would probably take an iPad 1 over any Android tablet right now.

I'm running CM7 (Android 2.3) on the Nook, and just find Android to be annoying, at least compared to using my iPhone. I'm going to see if I can sell my Nook...

Edit: I think Honeycomb might be better - but I've heard it doesn't run well on the Nook.

get a samsung galaxy tab 7 inch tab the GSM version refurbished at verizon, last I looked they were selling at around$200. I stopped usning my NOOK color (with CM7) since my brother gave me this tab (asian version). Its able to play 720p videos, Netflix ect.

Next obvious choice would be a NOOK Color hacked of course.

sorry my bad didnt see you wanted more than 7 inches (thats what she said).

The $300 dollar transformer is a no brainer.

Does she really need flash? Your best bet for a 7" tablet is a nook color, Playbook, or galaxy tab.

What? I guess my Transformer didn't get that memo.
