There's only about 10,000 options out there, so I figured I'd see what the ATOT brethren use.

This will be for a new business (not an e-store) with a blog. Not a huge amount of site traffic, but needs to be able to load pages not at crawl speed.

No idea how it works, but email is mandatory/must be robust. Will be sending and receiving a lot of emails from whatever account is configured and however it gets configured.

Suggestions? Likes/dislikes?

And if it matters, it will likely be some wordpress modified template set up on the site.

I've heard good things about Amazon's webservices but haven't tried them myself. Those might be a bit more robust than you're looking for though.

wasn't mad genius run by one of the guys on here?

Mad Genius is run by ATOT member ViviTheMage

He has a 30% discount coupon in his forum signature and there's a thread that, if you reference, I believe he gives you increased storage. I can't remember the thread off the top of my head.

Amazon cloud servers aren't designed for normal email use, though they have a separate service for sending bulk email.

For a blog, we just use (ourdomain).wordpress.com hosting so they can worry about WordPress security updates instead of us getting our www site hacked,

If you are planning to do mass mailings / bulk mailings not just normal customer emails then using a service instead of your own web server would be best. That way when people mark the mails as spam, your www server's IP address doesn't get blacklisted. I don't know what service we use at work. I've seen SendGrid mentioned here.

No mass/bulk mailings. Will be for a new/solo law firm for a "friend" that has spent his career working for a big firm. All "he" has ever known is that this is your email address and voila, email magically shows up on Outlook.

So "he" will need something capable of handling a fair amount of email traffic reliably on a daily basis as email is #1 for most lawyers.

Hey!

Yeah, madgenius hosting should be able to do that for you. If you feel you need more space, let me know ... I usually swing a few extra GB for AT'ers for no cost. DO make sure to use that coupon code when checking out!

We, like most hosts have a 300 per hour limitation on mailing, but if you have a good/solid reason, I can bump that up.

I run all my hosting purchases through this company (madgenius). I highly suggest them!

I hate the idea of getting into bed with a platform that's proprietary. I'm not saying Amazon has a bad thing, but I'd be much happier if they were running a standardized vmWare stack that could be replicated by anybody with the appropriate vmWare license. And not just vmWare, it could be xen, or hyperV, whatever floats your boat and meets your needs.

With this setup (vmWare stack), you're still able to design your core infrastructure using widely available tools and software. I wouldn't call it a walk in the park, but a knowledgeable engineer could move an application from vmWare to Xen and it'd be ok. You might have to rebuild your server image(s) from scratch rather than just convert, but it can be done.

Check out AirVm.com for an example. Josh is one smart dude and has built a pretty slick setup.

While it's true there are literally 1000s of hosters, but in my years in internet marketing there are only a few which are always used by most.

For a single site/blog, say a wordpress site you will likely be fine with shared hosting, the two major recommended players there are Hostgator or Bluehost

If you plan to host MANY sites/domains on one account or expect tons of traffic and resource usage...you may eventually grow out of shared hosting and want to consider a VPS/Hybrid or dedicated server or "cloud server"...like with Hostnine (like I have) or Knownhost. Both are very good.

For your uses, I am pretty sure you'll be fine with Hostgator or Bluehost.

For domain hosting I recommend Dynadot or Namecheap.

You didn't specify your budget, and it matters a lot when you decide your web hosting.
Also, if you have a newsletter feature on your website, you might consider an external service like mailchimp.

This is part of the reason we still even offer web hosting. There is no money to be made doing it, but it is when people grow out of their shared hosting, and need more power. We end up migrating them to a VPS, or dedicated server!

I used to use hostnine 5-6 years ago, they were awesome, and as far as I can see, still are. There are some business tactics i'd love to replicate, but don't have the man power!

I run all my hosting purchases through this company (madgenius). I highly suggest them!

Thanks Rinaun! Albeit some mail issues we had on one of our cPanel servers, we've been pretty much 100% uptime this last year.

Sorry to bump an older thread, but I didn't think it warranted starting a new one - just wondering if Vivi or anyone else can tell me if Mad Genius can easily host Wordpress? A self installer would be preferable, but I'm looking to start a very small time website - basically a personal site with a few email addresses.

Thanks!

Yes sir we can!

We use Fantastico, an auto installer for a lot of web applications, like wordpress.
