Web Hosting Question

When you go to buy a domain name you have the option to add e-mail services to it for a couple of extra bucks. My question is this, if you are hosting that website yourself by having a DSL line with a static IP address coming into your house can you set up e-mail on the website without purchasing that option when registering the domain ?

Of Course! That is what you have to do when you want to host your own e-mail servers!!

There is NO difference in the way things are done at Big Corp X than at your home! There are even services out that don't require you to have static IP's to host your own domain. You dl a client app that updates their dns servers of your current dynamic ip and your domain lists their dns servers on your record. If your ip is static you will still need a dns service (you can run that too!) to let people know what ip address cooresponds to your domain name. As far as smtp servers (email) I don't have any experience with anything but Sambar Pro Server which is a modest $99. (a www server with smtp serve built in) for a SOHO situation. I(we) use MS Exchange at work & I get e-mail through my provider at home. You can always do a search on google for smtp servers for your platform!
