When I was assisting my wife plan for our wedding, my rule of thumb to avoid drama was simply "who ever pays for the wedding, calls the shots." I made sure my family, her family, and our friends understood "no pay = no say".

We did what we wanted to do and that was the end of that. If you were involved, then we made sure you were on top of your sh!t. If you can't make it, then oh well. If you're hurt that you didn't get invited, tough. If you're a groomsmen or bridesmaid and can't make it or cause too many issues, then you were simply removed or replaced.

We, well mainly I, was heartless during the planning. It all worked out well in my opinion hehe.

Man you guys can pull off such reasonably priced affairs I'll be spending a boat-load on the engagement party and the wedding. My only hope is that the in-laws are generous enough so that the gifts offset a chunk of the price.

All depends on what you're willing to do.

I did a Elvis wedding complete with pizza at the reception for about $500.

My Star Trek wedding with Ferengi minister on the bridge of the Enterprise didn't cost much more than that.
