The last day of February. Sigh. Maybe @Kiska is happy about it, but for me, I dread having to limit my heat source, and firing up the air conditioning. Hopefully many of you still get to enjoy the cooler temps, but I am already wondering if I need to mow this week.

I wondered why my LHC points looked quite low, turns out I have 218 'error while computing' , now to try to find out why.....

@Assimilator1, right now I see at the host 10308960 details page:
"Virtualbox (6.1.12) installed, CPU has hardware virtualization support and it is enabled"

That is, the boinc client determined that AMD-V is enabled.
Yet the application believed AMD-V was disabled, which is strange.

Another application log from your host says "AMD-V is disabled in the BIOS (or by the host OS)" – emphasis is mine. Perhaps Microsoft Hyper-V was active for some reason. This would use AMD-V for itself and would therefore not go together with VirtualBox, if so. But I don't know Win 10 well enough to tell you how to check whether this was the case, and if so, how to get rid of it.

If you go under Control Panel --> Programs and Features --> Turn Windows features on or off (it's in the top left hand corner) it brings up the dialog where you can see if Hyper-v Server is installed, and turn the feature off if need be. I think on most versions of Windows 10 it will say 'Hyper-V Platform' which will need unchecked(assuming you're not using it for something else). You can have the Hyper-V Manager installed(for managing other Hyper-V servers) but having the Hyper-V platform makes Virtualbox not work. You can also just bring up the Windows search by hitting your windows key, and type in 'turn windows' and it should auto complete to Turn Windows Features on or off to bring up the same dialog.

It's a virtualization hypervisor for running virtual machines, somewhat similar to Virtualbox, but made by Microsoft and built into Windows. Since they use the same system functions for virtualization it prevents another VM program like Virtualbox from running.

If you open Virtualbox it should list the virtual machine in there. I would try to start the virtual machine and see if it gives a different error than what is in the BOINC logs. Even if Virtualbox was installed with BOINC, there should still be a start menu entry for you to be able to open it manually. It wouldn't be a terrible idea to run CPU-Z(or another similar program) and post a screenshot since it should show if AMD-V is enabled, etc., but based on the log entry @StefanR5R noted it does sound like AMD-V is enabled.

Re CPU-Z, AMD-V is listed in the 'instructions' box, I don't see it anywhere else.

I've opened virtualbox, I don't see any listed. There is a machine menu where I can choose 'new' or 'add'.
Btw, it's telling me I can update to 6.1.18 (from .12), should I? (It gives me an unclickable link! ).

If you open Virtualbox, and hit new to create a new virtual machine, and you select the dropdown under 'Version'(with the type as either Windows or Linux it shouldn't matter) does it show any 64 bit versions or are they all 32 bit? If they all show 32 bit, I would double check your bios and confirm virtualization is turned on(on my AMD machine it's listed as "SVM Mode" in the bios and was disabled by default). The BOINC detection for whether virtualization is enabled seems to not be working correctly. On the LHC website the host page for the PC I was testing with showed virtualization enabled, but if I tried to create a new VM in Virtualbox it only showed 32 bit as available versions, so when I checked in my bios SVM mode was disabled. Once I enabled that LHC works now.

I currently have BOINC installed without VirtualBox as I only use it for Rosetta at the moment, but I do use VirtualBox on my "office" PC to browse the internet or test software (I really like the tiny oddball CPU I have running in it, Xeon E3-1285v4 and its 128MB eDRAM L4 Cache ). I have quickly tested disabling the VT-x in UEFI, and instantly, VirtualBox only shows 32-bit OS as VM guest options.


Also, it either disables or flags the VT-x related settings as invalid.


Also, starting a VM that has VT-x enabled instantly throws an error.


Enabling VT-x in UEFI lets the 64-bit OS return as VM guest options.


Like Icecold wrote, you have access to these settings in the VM settings menu when creating a VM (or when it is shut down, using the orange gear icon after selecting the VM). Otherwise, you can only look at most of the settings (when the VM is running or in snapshot state). Also, the respective indicators on the bottom status bar on the VM window show the VT-x status (mouse-over).

They all show as 32bit, I'll check my bios shortly.

Hi everyone, thought I would check in with you. My WCG server farm is now nearing completion I just have to pick up another 3900X for a great bargain price and it will be done for now, at least until Zen3 is hitting my sweet price points Always more SCIENCE! to be done! Still making use of the cold weather, though A few more months of pushing for maximum PPD before I start toning down the power limits and turning on the AC from fan mode to Cool Mode, which will eat up any saved power. Oh well, for SCIENCE!
