The poor people's food looked healthier :^D
I'm sure that's true in some measure. The shoppers from more westernized countries appear to be buying many more ready-made items, so they're spending money to take the labor out of the chore of feeding the family. The shoppers who were spending the least were buying raw foods that will require a lot more labor to prepare. It's sort of the same trade-off the western nations have been making (and that other nations outside the "west" are increasingly making) since the industrial revolution.
Interesting comparison. It's nice to see that wherever they looked they could find large, happy families with what appears to be plenty on the table. That in itself illustrates the progress that has been made since the green revolution. People make a lot of comparisons between the diets of various cultures with respect to health, and I'm sure they are meaningful, but I prefer to focus on the fact that so many people who now have access to a varied and plentiful diet, ready to hand, were starving or eating the worst kind of garbage just a century ago. Burger King may not be the best food for your body, but you know what? It beats porridge and watered ale seven days a week.
