edit: If you are looking for stats for 29JAN2017, there are none. Free-DC lost a pair of SSD's and is having to get the stats site back up and running.

Greetings to all!

I'm not fully awake yet, so I just wanted to make mention of a few things I noticed putting the stats together this morning.
  • Participation in Folding at Home after December's race was quite steady until now, slowly dropping and then settling on about 20,000,000ppd, which is an impressive ppd for our TeAm. But the number of active folders is dropping quickly now, and so is the ppd.
  • Pay particular attention to the number one spot in WCG. Absolutely incredible performance there, xii5ku! Well done.
  • Last week we had LANMAN take the number one in the world position in RC5-72, and this week we have Markfw crossing the 2,000,000,000 milestone in Folding. After crunching away since about 2002, Mark only hit his first Billion 9 months ago, in April. And the second Billion in only 9 months!? Wow!

Tony.

********************************************
Thanks go, as always, to the folks responsible for Free-DC, who make this possible by keeping score for us.

In the event we have any non-crunching AnandTech readers who happen to wander into this thread:

Distributed Computing is where you allow your computing device (smartphones/tablets included) to work on things like medical research, mathematical stuff, sifting through telescope data to further the field of Astronomy, and many other 'citizen science' projects. It allows networked computers to band together to act as a supercomputer.

And you should join us.

Big thanks, Tony.
I've stopped F@H and started my previous projects (Seti@Home, Leiden Classical and LHC) where I wqant to reach some milestones ...

Well, not #1 in the world, just within Team Anandtech. (Wow.. I wish though.. the actual #1 person's stats are insane. Wish I knew who/how he/she was accomplishing that - 300k-400k per day back in 2015, that's quite the herd; he was sandbagging in there a few times, with 3-4 million block dumps, so it appears some classic sneakernet was going on.)

Thanks for the stats Tony!

BTW: I was able to get my hands on a Titan Z. Hate to say it, but outside of gaming, I wasn't really impressed; I know I had my hope set a little to high for a card that's been out for a while. (It does stand up to ANY game I can throw at it though! All graphics set to high and it doesn't even sweat.... steady 120-135fps) 42A on a single rail will definitely test most power supplies!

well, I just had a 1070 go bad, so I replaced it with a 980 FTW, and its doing 490k ppd, so loosing 140k ppd, but the other 1070's are now in the 2683 rig, and I decided to turn on 24 cores to cpu mode, and they are getting 66k, so net loss of 74k, not bad.

I wonder if a modern GPU would work okay in the X8DTL-i, and how many CPU cores I'd need to give it.

This is the result of all my gear at the peak of Primegrid Newton Challenge switched over to WCG/OpenZika in full racing mode. Which implies that this sort of output is not sustainable and will drop off soon.

Some more stats from Free-DC: Sorted by yesterday's output, xii5ku held rank 38 of the global WCG user stats, and the two 2P Xeons (hosts 3750287 and 3750289) ranked 17th and 15th of the global WCG hosts stats.

75 % of the sum of my WCG points over the last ten days were produced by these two 2P Xeons together (56 cores/ 112 threads in total, working 24/7 at WCG). The remaining 25 % of the production came from up to 9 PCs (up to 41 cores/ 64 threads in total, depending on weekday and time of day due to regular duties; only 4 of the PCs could work 24/7 at WCG).

Total production of this 10-day WCG challenge of xii5ku versus himself:

I'll see if I can produce as many WCG OpenZika credits as TennesseeTony's GCW Sieve credits from the Newton Challenge (converted 7:1 of course).

Race 1 practically-final stats:

1.55 M credits down, only 0.51 M more to go!

I wonder if a modern GPU would work okay in the X8DTL-i, and how many CPU cores I'd need to give it.

Folding@home's GPU feeder process is generally single-threaded, per each GPU. With my GTX 1070 and 1080 in a Windows 7 box with 4.0 GHz Broadwell-E with hyperthreading switched on, each feeder process almost always uses 100 % of one logical core, i.e. one hardware thread. Some GPU work units use less than that.

I wonder whether this high load of one CPU hardware thread is due to real work (meaning you need a really fast core for good utilization of the card), or just due to simple ineffective polling (meaning a slower core wouldn't reduce GPU utilization much, or not at all).

Besides, AMD GPUs apparently need a lot less CPU than NVidia GPUs in F@H.

Since mid December when I got these GPUs, I noticed a single occasion at which one feeder process shot up to a CPU utilization which corresponded to two hardware threads, for a blink of an eye. I am not sure whether this was for real or only a brief glitch in the Task Manager's bookkeeping. However, Markfw mentioned in Getting the most PPD out of your hardware for F@H that GPU-only F@H load exceeds 1 thread per GPU from time to time.

My plan would be to give the GPU two HT cores at first, then see if it suffers when reducing to one. It may also be that one core should be left to the system for routine things as not to take cycles away from feeding the GPU, that's my reasoning for reserving two for the GPU slot. The HT implementation in Westmere is not quite as good as it's gotten in later models, I think.

I don't expect to provide stats this Sunday, but it's possible (likely to be tons of errors in the reporting if so). FreeDC is down due to hardware failure.

From FreeDC:
Friday January 27th 2017.
One of the SSD drives has failed completely and another is showing errors. I need to pull these drives, replace and rebuild the stats. Going to be a while.

Update 3:30EST : Ordered 2xSamsung 850EVO 250Gb SSD's for overnight delivery.

Bummer. SSDs are great until they fail, most of the time they die they take all the data with them immediately. Anyone who can retrieve data from a wonky SSD should consider themselves lucky.

One downside of SSDs vs. HDDs is the much more complex firmware of SSDs of course. Nevertheless, if only reliability and availability are considered, I think SSDs are at the very least on par with modern HDDs. In some usages, SSDs should be far superior, e.g. higher reliability in mobile use since SSDs are mechanically much more robust; higher availability in RAID use since recovery from degraded state is much faster and more likely to succeed.

Just speaking theoretically, for lack of anecdotal evidence (I experienced only few HDD failures and no SSD failures since I started using mass storage in the form of C= A590) and lack of useful statistical sources.

as far as reliability goes, I agree - I think SSD's are on par, if not superior, to HHD's. the real difference comes in recoverability should one of these drives fail. almost all HHD's data is recoverable since the data on an HHD is never really erased, only written over. but, with SSD's i believe the data is erased (rather than written over) and even the data that is currently on the drive is unrecoverable (?) in most cases.

Ok Stefan, I don't know what "C=A590" means. I know you are not referring to a "camera"? Give me a clue.

Commodore A590, an expansion box for Amiga 500. Originally came with a 20 MB XT HDD; could also hold Fast RAM and external and internal SCSI devices. (Not my first mass storage in the wider sense, but my first HDD.)

...sorry for the off-topic talk, but with stats down, this is going to be a slooow weekend...
