I'm currently using a dip belt (belongs to the gym) for weighted pullups.
With a 45lb plate the chain is just long enough to loop through the 1 plate and allow for reasonable amount of manageability.
Adding additional plates is just not happening with this thing.

Before going out spending money on a dip belt with a longer chain, can anyone recommend other options excluding backpacks?

You could buy an appropriate length chain and chain spring snap link from lowes or homedepot. Loop your chain through all the plates and connect the ends. Then use the gym dip belt chain and loop it through weight chain. This may or may not work depending on how long the dip belt chain is as the weight could be too low and drag on the ground if the dip belt chain is too long.

Only newbs use plates for this-

act like you know what you are doing and grab a dumbbell. come in from you body side and set one end in through the hanging loop. just let it hang, no need to wrap the chain around or through. This is by far the easiest way to use the incremental and big weights with a dip belt.

With this info, I have forever changed your gym experience. No need to thank me, just pass it along to the other gym newbies you see foolishly hooking plates up through the chain.
took me a bit to find a pic - pulled from T-Nation:

Tip of the Day

Many times I'll see people in the gym stringing the dip belt's chain through the center of weight plates to add weight to their dips, pullups, or chinups.

As a tip, I'll mention to them that it's much easier to simply loop the chain around one end of a dumbbell than it is to string the chain through the center of a weight plate.

It's actually pretty inconvenient to use weight plates versus a dumbbell. The dumbbell stands up on it's own, you don't have to squat very low before the chain reaches the dumbbell, and you don't need to loop multiple dumbbells if you're going heavier than a standard 45lb plate.

I highly recommend chaining up a dumbbell instead of weight plates when adding additional weight to dips, chinups, or pullups.

Of course, this only works up to the weight of your heaviest dumbbell! Anything over and above that heaviest dumbbell is all weight plate!

Give the dumbbell method a shot next time, you'll be happy how simple and hassle free it really is.

Thank me later!

^ Good idea, although I haven't had any issues with putting the chain through the center of the plates. Plus, with it through a plate, there's a 0% chance it's going to fall off the chain by mistake.

if you try it, you will find out there is basically no chance of it falling off by mistake.

While that is brilliant, I also recommend a weighted vest.

I was pretty close to picking up one last year for running. By the time I finished researching them and settled on a brand, nature add the weight for me.

running with a vest sounds like a good idea but in reality it's more of an annoyance due to all the bouncing. you're better off running faster (do sprints), longer, or hills

The vest I was looking at was the ZFOSports.
I've known people who train with it and have run races with those who wore it for a race.
All reports state no bouncing.

As for running, I live in a hilly area so all my runs incorporate hills. As for speed work and length, got that covered as well.

Cross legs stick dumbell between them.

The best thing about this is when you're tired you can uncross, drop the weight and get a few more in.

You can also use kettlebells for this...we have some dip belts in our gym with slightly longer chains that allow you to loop the chain through the handle of the kettlebells.

There are some guys in the gym doing weighted pullups and dips with the 124lb and 150lb kb's.

Use a kettlebell. Just stick one foot through the loop and use your other foot to stabilize. No chain needed. Or use the chain if you want.

Edit - grrr. . . . someone beat me to the same suggestion.
