Weird Access problem with XP and 2k.

This one is kinda weird.

First, I am still new to the XP os. I have been with NT and 2k for years. The settings are kinda "hidden" to me in XP. I also don't like the "prettyness" of XP.

I just setup a wireless system for a friend of mine that is getting DSL in the next couple days. He bought a new new desktop for the wife and still uses his laptop for his work.
They want to set up the desktop as a "printer server" more or less. They use two different printers depending on what they are printing out. So, I thought I would setup the system to use the desktop computer as a printer server to make things a little easier then switching cables all the time on the laptop.
But I ran into a little snag. First, the wireless system seems to work. Both computers are pingable to each other. Both the XP and 2k machine can see both machines. XP being the desktop, the laptop is running 2k.
From the XP machine, I can access the laptop machine just fine. But the 2k machine can see both machines, but when I go to access the XP machine from the 2k machine, it asks for login and pass. I know this is normal. But when I try to enter the info, it will not allow me to login. Either as administrator or the one user it uses at the login screen.
I tried to enter a new user to see if that would make a difference, but it would still deny me access. Is there a setting that would allow me to access the XP machine from the 2k machine? Like 2k has user admin. I can't seem to find a user admin in XP.

I hope all this makes sense. Anyone have any ideas of if there is any other questions, please feel free to ask.

I don't know if this will help, but ensure that the following are done correctly: (double check all settings)

For the best results, make sure both PC's are in the same domain or workgroup.
Make certain that the same user account or admin account is on both PC's with the same password.

Next, from the Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Local Security Policy, make sure the follwing is enabled on both PC's:
In the Security Settings>Local Policies>User Rights Assignment; ensure that the first option "Access this Computer from the Network" has the same account name as intended (the one you checked above). Ensure that "Deny access to this computer from the network" does not list the same account name or any group which includes the name for which you want to enable access.
Under the Security Settings>Local Policies>Security Options; ensure that on both PC's have an identical "LAN Manager Authenication Level". If they still don't work with LMv2 set, then downgrade both to LM and after they both autheicate, the re-enable LMv2 on both. If the problem returns when LMv2 is re-enabled, then you probably had other domains and workgroups and enabled higher security at one time and may need to troubleshoot the problem.

If this doesn't work, do you have a firewall enabled on your local Ethernet connection on the XP PC? Are you filtering packets (like 135,137,138,139,445) or have you installed any third-party firewall?

Good luck and good hunting . . .

I forgot to mention . . . you can turn off the XP graphic enhancements (except for icons), by doing the following: In your Start>Settings>Control Panel>Task Bar & Start Menu, select Classic, in the Advanced Tab of the same, scroll to the bottom and uncheck "Personalized Menus". Within the Control Panel find the System icon, then in the System Properties find the tab with the Performance Options button and select the option from the list for Maximum Performance. (Notice how it unchecks everything?) Now, except for the icons, it will act and look like Windows 2000.

I always have the problem the other way around. My 2k machine doesn't need any passowrd at all to access my XP machine. But when my XP machine tries to access the 2k machine, it always has to put in a password. I wish there was a way to make it not do that.

I think the problem is the access account. I don't know how to login as Administrator on the XP machine. When it boots up, it goes to it's pretty icon page and there is only one account on that page. And it's not Administrator. But according to the settings, this account is the Administrator. From the laptop that is running 2k, I have tried loging in as Administrator as well as the account name that it shows up as on the XP machine and neither one is allowing me to access the XP machine. I even tried adding an account to both machines, and neither account allows me to access the XP machine.
I don't know how to explain this any easier without you having to drive over and seeing my problem. I just spent 50 min tring to explain all this over the phone with my gf and she was not getting it either.

I got it figured out. Don't know what I did, but all I did was grant guest access for 1 min. And whola. Fixed. Even after turning guest off again.

Who knows what I did.

Wolfie,

For your reference, at the login screen for XP, you can ctrl alt del and get the classic 2K login box. You can enter in the admin account/password there.

If you get TweakUI for XP at MS.com, you can also use it to tweak XP back to looking like 2K.
