OK all -

I just got my Baybus from Cliff Anderson - dual voltage (7v/off/12v), single-LED. I started rewiring my case, connecting 18-gauge wires all around and connecting them to my baybus. I am connecting 3 fans as of now with a 4th going on later (sharing a terminal) - a Delta 120mm, a generic 80mm, and a Sunon 120mm part number KD1212PMB1.

All fans work on the full 12v lead. The 80mm and the Delta 120mm work on the 7v lead - however, the Sunon not only doesn't work but I think causes a short in the system, and let me explain why. I test my fans on an old AT power supply since I can use a DPST switch to turn them on - in other words, I don't need a damn motherboard present to test fans. When I use the Baybus to turn the Sunon to a 7v connection, the AT power supply shuts off and the other fans stop. Turning the power supply off and then back on corrects everything, until I put the Sunon on 7v in which case it shuts down again.

I am going to e-mail 2cool (vendor of the fan) to see if he knows anything but in the meantime I thought I'd post here since someone is bound to have used this fan before on a 7v lead. I consulted Sunon's site (http://www.sunon.com.tw/fan/dc12038/kd1212pmb1-6a.htm) and it yields nothing useful. I will contact Cliff himself but the Baybus itself seems to work just fine, since no matter what terminator I put the fan on, the same result happens.

Anyone got a clue?

I get this too when trying to run a fan at 7 volts on an old AT power supply. I'm not even using a baybus or fanbus. The 12 and 5 volt leads were never meant to be used in this way, so your mileage may vary.

Hmmmm, so are you saying that it is just the power supply? This is an old AT power supply that I ripped out of an old 486-50 at work that we found sitting in our server room in a dark corner. I salvaged the floppy drive and power supply =). I will try another power supply, since the other fans work. Of course the other fans are smaller and draw less current but the current draw should be minimal.

Maybe this error appears since you don't have any devices (read: mobo) pulling current from the 5V lead? Right now you're running the current backwards on that lead. Might there be some diode or something turning the thing off? You could investigate this by connecting, say, a 10 Ohm resistor (or two fans in parallell) from 5V to 0V, and THEN connect your fan from 12V to 5V.

Alright BlueDeathscreen, you kinda lost me but I somewhat follow you. However I don't know enough about electronics to do what you just said. It's not that big of deal, I will try it with my main power supply tomorrow.

Speaking of which, is there any way to start an ATX power supply by hand, without the motherboard connected?

The test power supply specs are 145w with 4.2a over the 12v rail and 18a over the 5v rail- like I said I ripped it out of a 486. But since all that I am connecting is a few fans, less than 30 watts total, this shouldn't matter, should it?

elemental-
to start a PS without starting the MoBo..
just pull out the connector to the MoBo..
and then start it up..
you could also take out the connectors to your other stuff too.
but that dont matter..

Ummmm no.
I hate to break it to you but you can't just "turn on" an ATX power supply without the motherboard. There are pins that are jumpered by the motherboard that must be jumpered in order to get the power supply to feed the +5v, -5v, +12v, -12v, and +3.3v rails. I thought that all I had to do was jumper pin 13 (PS-ON) with pin 14 (ground) but that didn't work. I wonder what I am doing doing wrong.

I thought Cliff stopped making BayBus? I was going to order one the other night, but his web page said he was through. I hope he's still making them, 'cause I want one, dammit!

Hmmm I just looked at his web site and didn't see anything like what you just said.

It's a great tool and Cliff's a great guy to work with.

You can start an ATX power supply without the motherboard. Short Power On (pin 14) to ground. Usualy it's the green wire. Also, you probably need to connect the Power OK (pin 8) line to ground.

OK I didn't jumper Power-OK to the ground, just PS-ON to ground (pin 14-13).

What is the best way to jumper it so I have my hands free? Nothing I can think of would stay in place.

I just tested this out on an ATX supply I've got lying around. I only needed to short Power On to ground. I used a piece of wire from an old blown up atx supply and just shoved the wire in the connector.

Edit: Also, my power supply won't turn on unless there's a load on it. That could also be it.

Go to http://www.fanbus.com & click on the "Ordering" menu option. This is what you see:

First off, let me say thanks to all the people who have made this endeavor a success. For the last 9 months, I have had the pleasure of dealing with some of the coolest people on earth. Unfortunately, I am going to have to stop production on the BayBus's for an indefinite period. I have several large turning points in my life coming up in the next year, so I must take the time to concentrate on those issues. I am planning a major job change, a house move and trying to get my Bachelor's degree at the same time. Unfortunately, this does not leave much time for making BayBus's. In the last six months, I have had scarcely a minute to do anything outside my regular job, a helicotper Instructor Pilot, making Baybus's and going to school. The only problem is that I have a family to look after, and I am missing spending time with my 4 year old boy. I am committed to supporting the community in any way I can, and the focus of my site will become tutorial-based so those of you in need can construct you own devices. Look for detailed instructions to be posted here in the following weeks.

Bump for the night owls.
I still haven't had my original question answered - why does that damn power supply cut out when I switch the sunon to 7v?
