Weird boot problem

Hello hello!

Im kinnda new here and already I need some help. Please do cut me some slack for being new

Anyho as I said Id appreciate all the help you can throw my way...

I own a 5520G Aspire with Vista x64 installed. Up till recently the thing worked like a kitten. Now there seems to be a problem with booting the pc.

After POST and BIOS initializes (acer logo fades) nothing happens... All I get is a "_" sign flashing.

I tried ALT+10 (Acer recovery) and recently I also tried booting through Vista & W7 DVD to format everything but It doesn`t even get to that point where it reads of the dvd so it would boot off it. Acer recovery does essentially nothing, just black screens for a while and restarts the laptop...

And no, I didnt install anything new on it or change any of the hardware. I just turned it off and the next day BAAM - doesnt boot anymore.

Any help GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Check in the BIOS to make sure that the CD drive is set as the first boot device.

Also, try connecting an external monitor.

From just a quick check on the web it appears your situation is common for that model. Due to overheating of the chipset or the graphic card the solder joint breaks, requiring a reflow to fix it: ACER Aspire 5520G chipset rework. I'd hope it was something simpler but the symptoms you describe match the problem.

If you dont mind me asking how did you "check" it? I went the distance on google but never came up with a similiar error with this model...

So far it apperas overflowing is the only answer :S

That's most likely it, no point entertaining other ideas. That was a common problem with those Nvidia chipsets. It even affected some of their discrete GPUs.
