Weird computer shutdown problem

Hey guys,

Let me try to explain this problem. When the computer is in a off condition, I have to toggle the power switch in the back of the computer before it will turn on. If I dont do that, I dont hear that beeping noise from the BIOS and the monitor just does not come on but the fans and power lights are on.

I have a Windows XP Pro, 1.6 Ghz, 512 RAM amd 2000+, an ATI all-in-wonder 8500DV. The power supply is a Codegen 350X1 450W. I have an Asus motherboard ASUS A7N266-VM.

Also if the computer is running and I try to do a restart, it will get to the point where it is about to restart Windows but then the same thing will happen as the monitor wont turn on etc. At this point, I have to toggle the power switch in the back and then it will turn on with all the regular beeps and all. I dont understand why its happened but I just finally asked the question but its been happening for a long time.

If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it.

What are the full system specs, including cards, memory, and the brand & model of the power supply?

I have a bunch of motherboard owners' manuals that sometimes help me think of suggestions, so if you could pop the case and get the mobo's model, that would tell me which manual to check out. So the system has no cards? Not even a video card, is it running onboard video maybe? (edit: ooops, Radeon 8500DV, got it ) And could you see if you can tell what the RAM is, what speed/brand/model, sometimes the modules have a sticker that'll tell you.

I got to go to bed, but I'll check out your info in the morning and see what you were able to find out. :moon:

sorry for the late reply... I have a ASUS A7N266-VM...dont know what kind of memory i have because there is no sticker...anyone have any ideas??

just from what details you have given try flashing the bios.
i have seen this problem in a few MSI motherboards and flashing the bios fixes this issue.

I'm kind of hesistant to flash the mobo because i am not very knowledgable in that area so does anyone have any guides or hints to do it safely??
