The Navy always gets the nice housing. When we left Hickam AFB, Pearl Harbor had just finished building lots of new housing. They were pretty nice too. The housing on Hickam was all old and rotting.

Adak Naval Air Station continued to be a military base during the Cold War but was designated a Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) site in 1995 and closed in March 1997. Shortly thereafter, the town of Adak, Alaska, was incorporated at the site of the former base. Down from a peak population of 6000, the island recorded a 2000 census population of 316 residents, all in the city of Adak, in the northern part of the island. In 1980, the Aleutian Islands National Wildlife Refuge was created and much of Adak Island lies within its boundaries.

At its peak, Adak had a college, movie theater, roller skating rink, swimming pool, ski lodge, bowling alleys, skeet range, auto hobby shop, photo lab, and racquetball and tennis courts. A new $18-million hospital was built in 1990, just seven years prior to the closure of the station. By March 2003, six years after the closure of the station, most of these facilities had closed. For a time, Adak became a virtual ghost town, with its buildings showing little sign of wear or disuse.

Also from the wikipedia page:

Adak offers 16 miles (26 km) of paved and gravel roads. These can be explored on foot, by bicycle, or by renting a truck. There is only one vehicle rental business on Adak; ask for Will at the airport when you arrive and he'll rent you the pickup truck.

It is also ridiculously windy there. They were trying to put windmills there but they kept blowing down.

"The pickup truck" sounds like "The tank" Canada has.

I've flown into Adak many times, but the weirdest place out on the chain, bar none, is Shimya. I can't tell you how many hours I've orbited over that chunk of rock waiting for the crosswind component to come in.

It has since closed, but back in the day, there was this humongous phased array radar pointed at the commies on the north end of the island. Oh yeah, and wrecked ships all along the northwestern edge.

-edit-

There it is.

What was that thing for? To detect incoming aircraft/missiles?

I've driven through this town before...but it was in Wyoming, and it was 2am.

I'm guessing the bright colors are due to the amount and duration of the snow in Alaska.
Makes the building easier to see?
