Weird oc problem

Well right now I have a A7N8X-E Deluxe and a Mobile 2500+ XP. Right now it runs 11.5x200 @ 1.625 100% stable.

So I thought hey... good chip... lets keep overclocking, so I bump it up to 12x200. Only problem now is the cpu can't seem to really handle that at 1.625, so I bump up the voltage. It takes me all the way to 1.725 until I can loop Prime95 and 3dmark2k1 for about 4 hours. So I think nice.. it's stable.

Turn off 3dmark, check a few emails, surf a bit, and next thin you know, it's just shut itself off. Well... everything's turned off, except the power light is still on. I have to hold the power button to turn it "off" (make the power light turn off), then turn the computer back on. So I'm like wtf? The thing is I did a 12 hour memtest86+ run the night before, then did my 3dmark and prim95, but a few minutes after turning off 3dmark, it just shuts off. Anybody else exeperience this?

I've never experienced anything quite like that, but the first thing I would do is run Prime95 for longer than four hours. I'd run it for at least eight (at the minimum) and then see if your system makes it through error free. If it doesn't, then its not stable. If it does, then you know its something else. But running it for only four hours really doesn't tell you a whole lot.

Also, did your system run fine before you overclocked it, or have you had this happen even without the computer being overclocked?

One more thing...What type of power supply do you have running your computer?

I have a Enermax 350Watt. I'll give it another try. The thing is if I run Prime95 for say 5 minutes, my computer would crash. If I ran prime 95 with 3dmark, I can run it for 4 hours (or more, I quit it after 4).

Well if you can only run Prime95 by itself for five minutes before it crashes, then you've got a problem. Try taking a little bit off that overclock till you can run Prime95 by itself for a prolonged period of time. Then you know you've got a stable system.

I dont even think running 8 hours is even enough. I had overclocked my chip a few more fsb then usual and had it running for 13 hours and it shut down on me. Until your system runs past the 24 hour mark, you can't label it as 100% stable; but I think this 24 hour Prime95 test only applies to people who overclock and run their system almost 24/7, for the casual user maybe 12 hours is enough--depends on the maximum time you usually use your compter.

With good cooling, you can raise your vcore all the way up to 1.800. If you're ansy about that, leave it at 1.750 and see if your system is stable at that with your current highest oc so far.

Thanks for the replys. The weird thing still is why does my system shut down like that? I'm thinking it might be the Asus C.O.P. shutting me down, but I'm not 100% sure.

What temperature is your CPU running at? If you don't have a program to monitor that sort of thing, use Motherboard Monitor 5. Its a good little program. Because if you think C.O.P. is responsible for the shutdowns, then excessive heat must be a factor.

My first guess was heat as well. You can act like the operators at chenobyl and just set a higher degrees C threshold for cutoff, or just step it down a little and run those tests like everyone is perscribing.

OK here's the deal:

If you run other tasks along with Prime95 then because of disk accesses and ram usage your CPU may not be at 100%

I've seen this myself, be sure that your CPU is at 100% load or prime95 is useless.

run two prime's at the same time. I know this is a P4 thing but it will help keep your cpu at 100%

Hmm... yeah... I think that might be the problem, cuz when I'm running Prime95 and 3dmark.. it takes ages to finish one tests whereas with 3dmark off.. it completes it a lot faster, although i must say it never occured to me that I wouldn't be running at 100% in that situation. I'll definately give that a try.

With the temps, using Asus Probe to detect the temps, looks like it usually crashes out when my CPU temps gets to 60 (that's under the CPU temp probe) so it seems i might be hitting the COP cut off, since with COP, it's 75 degrees before it just shuts it down. Looks like I might be needing a better Fan for my SLK800.
