weird perspective

I was out in the barn a little while ago, busting ice out of water buckets. When I was about to start refilling one of them I looked down and saw blood all over the bucket. My first reaction was "ohhh noooo! One of the goats is hurt!"

Is it really weird to feel a huge sense of relief to figure out that it was me who was bleeding like a stuck pig & not an injured goat? My hands were pretty numb from the cold, so I still don't feel anything.

But, I thought - that's really weird that I'd worry more about an injured goat than about an injured me.

I mean no offense but I'd rather a goat die than me.

Hey Doc, were your hands bleeding or did you nick yourself somewhere else with the ice pick?

And why weren't you wearing gloves if it was that cold? (~32F or less)

Just wondering and hope you feel better soon.

Well, of course. But as far as an injury that requires some care - I apparently prefer that it's me. I'm a good patient, I hold still, and I let myself wash the wound & put on a couple bandaids.

I thought about it for a while, and I think it's a weird perspective that a lot of people would have. For example, I'd bet that a lot of people would prefer that they receive a couple of stitches for a cut than someone put a big dent in the side of their car.

I rather me get hurt then an animal I am close to, such as my cat. I know I can probably deal with it more then a smaller animal can.

This is a better view for most people. Personally I don't give a shit. I already have a giant dent in my car

Its because we know that we will heal. If its someone else or something else, its completely outside of our control which makes us feel helpless.

Weird how our lil minds work huh?

I would prefer myself because treating myself wouldn't be as difficult. The animal cannot take of the injury by itself, you need to spend time treating it, checking up on i, and then there is the risk the animal can make its injury worse. It becomes a chore. And then if the injury is severe or the animal dies, there is money to be lost. If I sneeze its no big deal but if the parrot sneezes then its the $1000 cost of the parrot at risk (a parrot with what seems to be a cold could end up dead).

Re: hands - no gloves because they'd get wet. I probably got cut by a hunk of ice somehow - got me perfectly on the knuckle & cut down deep. I still don't feel a thing there though.

I'd be the same way. It's easier to take care of yourself, and you know to keep goat shit out of the injury; goats not so much :^D

Um no way. I'd rather someone else be hurt. For example, if a brick fell off an apartment building and hit a stranger next to me, I'd think "thank god it wasn't me", then I'd calmly walk away.

You just discovered the normal human reaction of careing for others before yourself?
Don't break ice with your bare hands, it can be sharp.

We tried putting our goats in a new fenced area today (electric) and it didn't keep them in. All of the sudden we had one skittish loose doe and we are right next to a pretty busy highway. THAT got my heart pumping until we had her contained, I'll tell you...
