Weird problem with DHCP and ethernet connection

My roommate's computer has a Linksys LNE100TX NIC and just reformated her computer. Well now on bootup you have to run winipcfg EVERYTIME and release/renew the IP before it will recognize the IP address?

It is using the same drivers it always has and worked fine for 3 years before hand. Any idea as to why you have to run winipcfg everytime now?

It always has the PPP instead of the NIC card in the box.

I'd try reinstalling the nic and networking protocols.

been there done that....tried it all.

The only thing I haven't done is try another slot but it's been in the same one since 98' so WHY would it not work. I know I should try but there HAS to be another logical reason.

 

What other adapters do you have installed?
Any DUA? or VPN?

none except straight Cat5 via ethernet (university)

supposed to be all DHCP

Are the DNS and default gateway server assigned or manually entered? Might be a DNS problem.

it's all straight DHCP. You can just plug Cat5 in and reboot and you can/will have connection.

Try manually setting the 10/100 full/half setting for the NIC. maybe the negotiation is taking too long. That's my WAG....

In the meantime just put a batch script in her startup flder that runs something like:
winipcfg /release_all
start /w winipcfg /renew_all

Then she will have to hit "ok" twice, but she'll have her ipconfig setup.

It sounds that either the network card does not bound to TCP/IP protocol or the machine is not set to login to the network. You should check the protocol stack and protocol default settngs. You should have "Client for Microsoft Network", TCP/IP protocol, and network card driver installed. Network driver should be bound to TCP/IP protocol and TCP/IP protocol should be bound to "Client for Microsoft Network".
