So i've got a HK AVR-254, that has a zone-2 output.

I'm putting the AVR in the media Room, but wanna to hook up the Zone2 to the gym next to it. My speaker panel only has one extra set of terminals.
Can i hook it up so that both left and right goes into the single pair...
and then hook up two speakers left and right to the otherside?

So in essence combining left/right into one channel? Or will OHm' be too much?

I think that is a very bad idea. If you simply want both speakers to act in mono mode, simply change the settings in your receiver (assuming it supports this). Otherwise, if your zone2 has pre-outs, you can combine them and pass that line to an external amplifier (preferably in the room with the zone2 speakers) and connect the speakers to that amplifier. The added benefit of this method is that you then have volume control in the zone2 room via the amplifier.

Ok, here's a diagram of what im trying to do.
I want to get the most power out of the 2-channel Zone2, into 2 speakers.

But since my wall plate only has one set of posts on it, what can i do?

If you are going to be forced to limit yourself to one wall post, then you only have room for one speaker.

To do multiples, you'd have to consider bridging. You'd have to see if you can bridge the 2 channels of your amp into a single channel mono amp. You'd then have to bridge your speakers together. Depending on how you bridged them (parallel or serial), determines the resistance of the load presented to your amp.

You need to know the following:

  • Can your AVR bridge those two channels?
  • If so, what ohm load is that bridged design capable of driving?
  • What is the ohm rating of your speakers?
  • Finally, how would you need to connect your speakers together to achieve the designed load of the amp? (serial or parallel)

So firstly, see if you can bridge the channels of your amp, and go from there.

Ideally though? Run another set of speaker wires.

In theory, you could split off the wiring coming from that wall plate into two different feeds and then hook them up to an impedence matching volume control. That will keep them from putting the receiver into an overload shutdown. That will also give you volume control within that room.

Heads up though, if that 254 is anything like my AVR-247 the zone 2 is HORRIBLE. You'd be better off just getting a 2nd old stereo receiver to power it.

Just wondering but what makes the 2nd zone horrible?

I had one model slightly older than that - the AV-247. The Zone 2 on that was woefully underpowered for my whole house setup. There was barely any volume and quite a bit of static.

I was running an Onkyo RC-180 that had the dreaded HDMI failure. I had that shipped out for repair and subbed in the HK in it's absence. It was unusable. I've got 3 pairs of speaker through the house that run through a speaker selector and then out to independent volume controls.

Wow, i thought Zone2 was same as the 2 rears, which should be 50W...

I guess not.
