Welcome to Team AnandTech SETI!

We are now 2,020 members strong.

I would like to introduce our newest members:

Jack GAN ---- Rank 1138 New WUs ---- 70
Wildhund ---- Rank 1325 New WUs ---- 41
maxcom ---- Rank 2020 New WUs ---- 0

(#42) ---- Gone Name -30
Peter ---- New Name 30
/Good work, Peter /

We hope you drop by often and say hello.

Attention: New Members that are having trouble signing up!

The servers are having some bandwidth problems on the University of California ? Berkeley Campus and you may have difficulty getting your new SETI installations up and running. This is not your fault. You are probably doing everything right but until the bandwidth is restored you may not be able to complete your installation. It has been reported that things should become better between 2:00 AM CST into the early morning. Try again during those hours. And be sure to cache plenty of WUs when are able to contact Seti At Home.

We like to recommend that all of our new members go to the following link and use the Preferred Method 2 Installation: SETI Help and Installation

Thanks for the welcome guys. I have an OCd p4 crunching but don't have DSL (damn 3 mo. wait time) so it takes forever to download these WUs. Am I better off connecting once a day and uploading the 30 or once a week with ~200?

thanks -max

Max,

I would recommend setting up SetiDriver if you haven't already. Cache enough units for 3-4 days of crunching. Set it to point to one of the TeAm proxies (I run one at 216.133.27.135 Port 5517) and that will make uploading and downloading units much smoother. If you need instructions on how to setup, PM me and I will help you out.

I am kind of new here. So need some advices from you guys.

I have a Classic Athlon 750MHz system running RedHat Linux working on those WUs now. I am getting excited when I joined the TeAm. So I am thinking of getting a dual processor system to work on more WUs.

My question is, will dual proc system has better performance working on those WUs? (I think so, am I right?)
Is RedHat Linux support dual processor?

I am using cable connection now. So I guess I don't have problems with downloading WUs and uploading the results.

Every comment will be appreciated. Thanks.

Twinhead,

The Seti client is not optimized for dual processors but you can run one on each processor. I am not as familiar with Linux as others so there are better sources of help for it than me. I do run the cli with Setidriver on a dualie using Win2k and it is rather easy. You might want to put up a seperate thread asking for linux help so one of the penguin people will see it.

As for connections, it is still a good idea to run through one of the proxies as it gives some insurance incase something goes wrong with Bezekerley.

"The Seti client is not optimized for dual processors but you can run one on each processor"

What do you mean by run one on each processor?

The client is not optimized so that a dual proc machine will do a unit utilizing both processors to make one unit go faster. You can though set up two seperate instances of the client where each proc gets it's own work unit. Does that make better sense than the crummy way I explained it above

Let me make myself clear here.

So with a dualie one WU will be done faster than a single processor system.

So if I run 2 clients at the same time on a dualie, each processor will get a WU for itself.

Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.

You are partially right.

One Wu will not be faster with a dualie. Since the client is not optimized for multiprocessors it takes the same or a little longer to run it on a dualie than on a single.

To get more units done on a dualie you have to run two instances of the client and each processor then will get it's own work unit to tackle.

So for example:

If you have a dual Athlon 1800 XP Machine and a single with the same processor this would be the scenario:

Single Processor: CPU Time per unit 3:15-3:30 (assuming VIA KT266A Chipset) 7-8 Units per day output.

Dual Processor: CPU Time per unit 3:30-3:45 (assuming AMD 760 chipset memory performance not as good as VIA KT266A) 14-15 Units per day.

See each units processors the same or a little slower but because you can run two clients at the same time on the dualie you get almost twice the daily output.

So I just simple run 2 clients at the same time? Any configuration for the client on a dualie?

How long usual it takes to tackle a WU down? Lets say an Athlon 1 GHz system.

And linux does support multiple processors, if you are still wondering about that. Dual, quad, etc......

Well as I was saying earlier I am a crummy resource for how to configure crunching on a linux box. There are others here that are better experts on setting up Seti with linux so you would probably get much better help by starting a new thread asking some of our esteemed Linux using members to give you a hand.

Here is a linky to a page that will give you WU time estimates based on the processor.

Ohh...emm...one more question.

For those websites which show the stat for this team, how do they maintain their database?
I mean my client doesn' connect to anyone of their server, how can they update my new stat?

If you are talking about team members who have sites that show the team's stats they pull them at certain times during the day. You can go directly to Berkeley if you want to get the more current stats for yourself. The team stats there update at regular intervals throughout the day. If you want more up to the date stats you should get SetiTeam which will pull the stats for the whole team and update them whenever you want. You can get it here.
