While I get why they would have this article, I don't understand how the location of the ATM has anything to do with it.

What is to stop welfare recipients from using the ATM at a bank to withdraw cash and use it to buy pot (or crack, or diapers, or whatever).

The pot stores in CO are a 'cash only' business so many of these store owners have installed ATM's in their stores as a convenience for their customers...

I understand your point about the location not mattering as they could make a withdrawal anywhere, but this does make a valid point about the blatant misuse of government assistance...

But, it isn't aimed at that. It is aimed at the 'Pot shops', trying to pass the blame to them. "If they didn't have ATMs, or if they didn't exist!, welfare queens wouldn't be able to buy drugs with their welfare checks."

I agree the welfare system is being abused, but are we going to actually micromanage everything these people buy? That has got to be cheaper than letting them starve while high right? And, pot is legal under CO state law. What someone legally (questionably legal, I suppose) buys with their welfare money isn't a problem. Are we going to be upset when they use welfare money to buy nothing but confetti or string cheese? No, of course not. Unless those damn string cheese lobbyists stop bribing me!

Maybe they just used the ATM at the shop because it was closest to their house?

Where is the article about the number of withdrawals from ATMs near liquor stores?

We really need to go back to government supplied food.
Basic items. meat, bread, cheese, milk, eggs, beans, rice, potato's. None of this debit card/food stamp shit.
Its way too easy to abuse and people are eating garbage food besides. Or they sell their debit/stamps for 50 percent and buy alcohol and cigarettes. Thats the same thing as throwing the money away.

Also wish it wasnt allowed at convenience stores because those places charge twice as much as a grocery store. That too is like throwing money away.

This crap has been going on forever. I remember in the 80's a news show bought guns with food stamps. If you have something that is worth food, it's good enough to buy anything with some bartering

It all depends....

It's possible to argue that the real point of Government Assistance is to keep the people Pacified so they don't cause too much trouble. If we make that postulate a baseline assumption in our study, then in such a scenario: ATM's in Pot Shops are a freaking Bullseye!

It was for purchasing Bud Brownies man...it's food so sure, why not.
No worse than our govt buying illegal drugs from Mexico with intent to distribute..and yes I'm referring to a conspiracy theory.
