You guy's are to easy. Never buy anything when it first comes out. This crap is all increment technoloy. Don't drop your pants so fast. Wait and see just how good this card is first. I certainly would't pay $350.00 - $500.00 for no computer part. It changes to fast. I'am ordering my ati 8500 today $91.00.

now some of us like to play with the new stuff and can afford to. You on the other hand prefer to play it safe. nothing wrong with that, but no need to crap on what other people decide to do with thier own money.

I couldn't agree more. "No computer part" for $350-$500??? That's ridiculous!

On a more serious note, it's all relative. To some people, $400 isn't as big of a deal as it is to others.

I can't imagine spending a bunch of money on a bottle of wine. Does that mean the next guy doesn't find value in a particular bottle? Who am I to say what someone else should spend... on anything?

Another way to look at it all, when something new comes out, that usually pushes down the prices of the previous newer stuff. It may even help push the Ti4xxx prices down a bit.

Also, people who have older cards xxx>GF3/7500's may be a good deal they've been looking for.

Though I like the looks of the R300 so far, $400 is still of my prefered range.

guess i'll be upgrading my computer again

so far a 2.4 533 (i spent 600.00 for) ram and motherboard(another 400.00) gave this to my dad (who was on a p-133) (which included my 21 inch monitor 512mb rdram and a abit th7ll raid mobo ati all in one wonder card and sblive) so...i guess i'll be needing me a new processor and case too
oh yeah i want the new p4t533 and 32 bit dram so there goes another 600.00
oh yes can't forget the scsi raid with 4 36lp drives in a raid 0/1 array(soon)(although i'm still looking at this setup and may change it if i can get better or faster or my needs change much)
and a new ati all in one wonder 9700 at christmas still looking at the audigy too

excessive definately but what a fun factor not to mention its capabilities

and i really liked seeing the little boy look of wonder on my 60 year old dads face when i gave him his upgraded toy,he got me hooked on gaming when i was younger, and now that he's disabled,he'll have plenty of time to play all the new games (that wouldn't play on his 133.)

can't put a price tag on that

and i get to upgrade again woot lol

Personally I'm still using a Geforce 2, but you should be happy there are many people willing to pay top dollar for the fastest graphics card or any other piece of computer hardware. Without them, hardware manufacturers would have to make their profit and fund R&D off of low end parts and that 8500 would be much more expensive then $91. Just look at AMD, they sell plenty of processors but their ASP's and profit margins are so low due to the lack of an expensive, high end part, that they lost millions and millions of dollars this quarter.

Exactly...you should get ...something..... for that kind of money.

Funny, I have a friend at work that gives me a huge hard time because I spent a grand putting in a pool my kids use everyday, all summer long "That would be nice in Phoenix" he says (I live in Oregon), meanwhile his motorhome he pays $400/mo for sits in his driveway all but 2 weeks a year. Its all relative, $400 for something you can enjoy everyday isn't so outrageous IMHO.

You know what is REALLY funny? I'm sure you are the same type of person who would criticizes someone for buying a Ferrari, but would LOVE to drive one. Big toys come with big price tags, it's a simple fact of life. If you can't afford the big toys, that's your problem not mine. If you want to take that attitude, why pay $1000+ for a PC to play games? Why not just get an XBox which does a GREAT job of playing games at a fraction of the cost ($199), and just use your busted up 'ol PII machine for your PC needs?! I don't know about you, but my PII400 runs Windows XP Pro and Office XP pretty decent.

The Radeon 9700 is %50 faster than the fastest Nvidia card. Nvidia used to provide a %50 increase every 6months, but they have failed to do so with the Geforce 3-4 lines. Ati has stepped up to the plate and provided us with performance that Nvidia cannot provide. I think that ATI deserves to to earn lots os money from their top of the line product. Maybe you would prefer to have only one video card company, that would really make things cheap.

Umm, last I checked, almost all firms dealing in semiconductors of any kind are struggling just to make a profit at all. Most aren't. Either way, I'd like to see you try to design something with 110 million distict transistors that can turn a couple hundred thousand lines of code into a convincing 3d depiction of the world around us, then come back and say "make me earn my money!" Jesus, some people.
