Well, it looks like Conroe @2.66 eats a fx-60@2.8 for a light afternoon snack...UPDATED ARTICLE AT AT!

Good to see intel finally stepping up to the wicket & playing some serious strokes

Now we just wait on the pricing, but for those who have to have the best, you'll be running conroe in 6months time unless AMD does the almost impossible with AM2 (and no commentators think that likely right now from what i've read so far)...

EDIT: pricing seems to good to be true as well:

It is exciting to see such a performance jump from a new CPU, since it's been a while since there was such a major jump

What excites me the most is massive gains in gaming in games that are GPU limited. It just blows my mind. I have GOT to get one of these when they come out, there are no if's, and's, or but's about it. I haven't had an Intel chip in several years, either...lol.

I'm kind of hoping they have an A64 3000+ type model come out in the Conroe domain...I'd really like to spend ~$200 for a low end one, and not $250+.

A $200 dual core conroe? Dayumm, Intel would clean up with that, as they should be massive overclockers with the right setup... The enthusiast market would leap back to intel so fast... wow. Then again, we might see $100 AMD dual core chips. It costs AMD less to make a 3800+ manchester than a 2800+ newcastle in terms of die size I would love to see AMD go barton XP with their X2 lineup....

Yeah, as i mentioned in a few of the other threads already, i have a feeling the OCing potential is going to be huge with these

If they can release an extreme edition at over 3 GHz, i bet the cheapest Conroe will get damn close, if not over 3 GHz

I think i'll be getting one these when they come out as long as their are decent OCing mobos for it!

Very impressive.

AMD better step it up soon..

They might have to start pumping up clock speeds!

Yawn... I just upgraded (new A64 rig) and my system works great for what I do (BF2). By the time I can afford to upgrade again, AMD will have something better than (or equal to) Conroe so I really don't care!

My only problem is, are the boards that decently overclock these new Conroes going to cost as much as the dang procs. Even if these really wipe the floor with AMD's offerings I WILL NOT, WILL NOT spend more than 150 on a mobo. Period.

To that end I might be living a pipe dream but when you are in college and only make 16/hr I need to make my dollars last.

Good for you

But for the rest of us it's pretty exciting, this is a huge performance jump...

That's what I'm eagerly waiting for, a nice down and dirty AMD/Intel price war right around the time I'm ready to build a new rig to go along with Vista. Just like the good old days when you could buy an AXP 2500+ for around $100 and clock it up to where it was competitive with a high-end P4.

If Conroe is as good as they say it is, then I might just have to get a second job at a retailer that qualifies for the Intel Retail Edge discount program.

Umm can I get one of those Conroes, please. Oh yeah throw in a 7800 GTX 512 while your at it. What's that? 6 months? But I thought................what's that? Availablility? Yields? Whats that? Bit Boys? Who are they?

I been a hardware freak for almost 12 years now, and here is the reality. It can be fast, cook, clean, and wash clothes, but if I CAN NOT BLEEPING BUY IT, who gives a damn. I am so tired of these glorious products, best of the best, but you can't buy it. And with Conroe, please, 6 months? 6 months is a lifetime in hardware. Give me a break.

I"m pretty skeptical about the Intel published benchmarks on the Conroe... will be interesting to see what unfolds in the next few days.

Intel always do this

at least you know exactly what you will be getting...

and read anand's comments on AM2 to see what AMD has in store for us over a similar time period, the answer appears to be 'not much', and it seems unlikely to change until the move to 65nm happens at the least.

Heck, for gaming a 2ghz Conroe (assuming it scales) should be as fast if not faster than a fx-60@2.8...

the FEAR ones were done by AT...in fact all of these were done by AT, but the FEAR ones should be almost entirely clear of any possible tampering...

it would be pretty stupid of intel to lie about it on this scale dont'cha think? We'll all be able to test it ourselves soon enough...

Alot of people expected AMD to play it safe and end up fumblings, especially at the INQ. THey never pushed their advantage. THe reason AMD has been gaining ground is not because of their marketing or lack thereof but because they had a superior product. If AMD does not have the superior product or , judging from this information, a remotely competitive product, then they are gonna lose all the gains they've made the last 3 years. It's utterly incomprehensible. YOu know i'd almost suspect AMD and INTel plan the market surreptiously together so they dont end up in a bloody war of attrition like ATI and nvidia. Of course, we as consumers need the attrition though some of you as enthusiasts get annoyed with leapfrogging techs.

Anyway, I'd recommend people start selling Amd STOCK.

Don't forget "new OS" as well, if Vista Ultimate is worth the price.

Well, my university has a Microsoft licensing agreement...I got XP Pro for $5, so I'm hoping Vista will be similarly cheap through them
