Sorry to hear that.
It's a nice compliment from the doc that he thought you were juicing.

If it makes you feel any better, I know a strong man competitor who tore his during atlas stones.
He recovered fine and was back at full strength, competing again in no time.
The way they anchor it, it can be better than original.

Don't worry about your gains losses. It comes back faster than you lose it, especially in your shape.

I imagine the first week or two post-surgery are the worst in terms of recovery pain. I'm sure you'll be back out and about in a few weeks. Once physio starts, that's obviously a sign of where they expect you will be in recovery at that time. Wouldn't have you doing physio unless it was appropriate to move.

Body weight is on a steady down trend.
day before surgery was 207 (6/1)
day after surgery was 211 (6/2)
this morning was 202.6 (6/16)

it goes fast.

That is likely just glycogen from not training. Gains are not lost as quickly as people think. It will come back at the same speed that you lost it. At your size, 10 pounds in either direction is a common occurrence.

Based on your previous posts, it sounds like you are deathly afraid (obsessive) about this. Just chill, rehab and get back on it.

i am obsessing, but in my work/life, it is very limiting. the struggle was pretty darn real when they took me out of the splint and I saw my arm. on top of the visuals, i can feel my triceps atrophy on that arm..... just a constant mind f@k

I'm hoping the gains come back quick and I feel like if I keep moving with the rest of my body they will. I feel like I am doing both better and worse than I expected at this point. Just need to make it another 4 wks and I'll feel a whole lot more comfortable with my situation.

Wow, I didn't expect the scar to look as big as it does. Glad that recovery is going well. In the long-run, does this permanently impact your strength/endurance in the bicep or does this eventually become good as new?

the pic might make it seem larger than it looks in person... it measures a little about 2.5" in length (that's what she said?)

what they tell me is that my strength should be comparable. when I get to my "upper limits" I will know that it isn't the same and that I had done something to that arm.

I keep asking about if I am more prone to re injury or if the repair will end up as strong or stronger than before.... they haven't really answered that. we are basically relying on scar tissue for the permanent reattachment. Scar tissue will grow over the repair. I guess time will tell. surgeon just keeps saying, lets be smart about this.

complete tear of the left distal biceps tendon....

adjusting the forks on my forklift on tuesday I tore my biceps tendon off at the elbow. tendon and biceps are balled up nice and high in my arm. didn't take much to do it. the fork weighs maybe 60# but caught me just right. Knew instantly when it happened I had torn it. like someone hit me with a stun gun in the pit of my elbow. Not really all that painful afterwards. couple sharp, shooting pains now and again, just a lot of aching and a a little numbness and tingling in the fore arm through my fingers. very minimal swelling and almost no bruising.

Surgery scheduled for this coming weds. it's a day surgery, 1-2 hrs. Might be back at things by sept. have to see how things go. im 37 yrs old and feel like im falling a part... like I've reached the point where old people start falling. this will be my first ever surgery. Not looking forward to it, but living with the gimp arm for a few days, I am ready to move forward and get it done.

given the time frame this will be a challenge for me and my work (farmer). Told the doc that a 12 wk recovery was the equivalent of castrating your prize bull

so stay healthy my friends

update 2:30 am 6/6
it's been a few days since the surgery.... surgery went well and being a first timer to anesthesia I think I took it like a champ. felt like I woke up from a short nap.

following the surgery the arm has quite a bit of swelling. use of my hand is severely limited. can barely make a fist. much more useless than I expected. standing or even riding in a car causes noticeable swelling within a short time. pain is very minimal, though they have me in a half cast/splint and on friday I had to go in and had to have them cut off a portion of it that was causing pain on my wrist. actually causing a pressure ulcer, so I have a little more mobility in my wrist and hand now that they shortened the splint... but again, hand is pretty much worthless at this point

from where I am today, the recovery feels like it will be every bit as long as they state. Getting a little cabin fever already. ventured out for a couple hours today, but it was too much as it made the arm swell up pretty good for the rest of the day, so i will be refrain from doing that for another couple days. go back to see the surgeon on the 9th and start physical therapy on the 15th

updated 6.16.16

had my first therapy session yesterday. PT seemed impressed at my range of motion, but also concerned that I have little to no pain. she asks "do you have a very high pain tolerance?'... no I don't think I do. I think that I injured it in less than dramatic fashion, so I think that has kept swelling/pain/bruising down. I am in a holding pattern till I see my surgeon again on the 13th of July. For now, I have exercises I need to do 3x a day for range of motion along with some scar massage. Beyond that I need to protect the arm and not lift anything. I have to see the PT once a week as she "wants to keep an eye on me" as she is concerned I will over do it because of the lack of pain to hold me back. I am 100% committed to protecting the arm and the repair. I don't think I would recover from the depression I would fall into if I retore this arm.

forgot to add that i am back in the gym with my other 3 working limbs. have had 4 workouts in the last 6 days. that has been the biggest positive in terms of how I feel. Can't do free squats so I am limited to the smith and plate load machines and when I load plate machines, it am pretty much limited to handling the 25# plates. I feel like the gym is the safest place for me as I don't do anything with the arm. when I am at home I feel like I am more at risk of grabbing at things.

a little over a month out from surgery. had 3 PT sessions and I am progressing "great". I have full range of movement in the elbow joint, just need to work on pronation of the hand/wrist.

I am having some aching in the back side of the elbow, but nothing new. scar is looking less than stellar. I meet with my surgeon in about 10 days and it sounds like I will start 'strengthening' shortly after that. My PT says don't get your hopes up, it will be like 1-2lbs.

I did however get under a bar for actual squats yesterday for the first time in weeks. things are coming along, slowly, but they are progressing:

I am at 6 weeks out from surgery. met with my surgeon yesterday for the first time since they took cast off me.

Everything looks good at this point. I start strengthening PT in two weeks. I'm still a ways away from any gym time with that arm. My next appointment with him is 9/13. Until then I'm limited to eating and drinking with the arm; and whatever weight I use with the therapist. This was a mental blow as I figured I was halfway home by now. Another 8 wks seems like an eternity. He just keeps telling me, we need to be smart about this. I tell him I'm committed to whatever it takes

So sorry that you have to go through this, but just keep your hopes up, and keep going at it. Really, more than anything Im glad you took the surgery, as I had a Jr. High physics teacher who actually had the same injury while lifting a TV in the back room in the middle of teaching class, with the whole class hearing him in pain. For some unknown godly reason he decided to not have the surgery, as he said it was too much bother and time to go through the whole surgery and therapy, "cause all he needed to do otherwise was learn how to use his arm differently".

Also, please dont rush back into physically stressing your injuries, I hate to see how many do that all the time.

Your arm still looks like a bodybuilder's... even after all this.
LOL

just a good angle and lighting....

such a small world. One of the guys I train with time to time, actually a family friend ( his dad actually donated a kidney to my dad), had the same surgeon for his ACL repair. We never really even talked about it till I showed him my "work restriction" note

update is I am still chugging along with a 20# limitation. I see my surgeon on 12/15 and he will reassess things at that point. I am now coaching my sons hockey team and it gets pretty sore after some practices where I handle the puck a lot. Other than that, I am still lifting, but staying away from any rows/curls. I am hitting my pushing movements pretty hard, but even that is somewhat limited due to handling the weight (dumbells). even though it's been 6 months, I don't see anything much beyond a 50% recovery with it for another 4-6 months. at my last appointment, the surgeon advised me to look a little longer term (12-18 months) to really be back to where I was before.

that said:

the muscle has come back a bit, but the insertion at the elbow bend is not the same. I am pretty confident it never will be the same. it was always my bigger, more aesthetic arm... it might, at some point, be the bigger arm again, but it won't have the same look to it.

it has been a challenging road... my body weight has been creeping up. hit 219 after thanskgiving, highest I have been in nearly 3 yrs. just hard to keep everything together when you can't train the way you need/want to. I have decent weeks, but really been up and down. was at the gym yesterday and had a good talk with a guy about his contest prep. We talked for a good half hour and asked about how I looked before the injury.... he floated my ego a bit and said even as I sit I am 6 wks away from being competitive. not sure I agree, but it helped me mentally pull out of a bad weekend of eating and gave me motivation to pull things together and get back on track.

Pretty obvious the mental recovery is much harder than the physical. in time it will pass and I'll look back at this as a bump in the road. Unfortunately today it feels like a mountain

What's the reason for continued soreness? Scar tissue? I would think it was healed by now, right?

My MRI is Tuesday. Trying to get this in by 12/31 if I need it.
