Congrats to you for getting ripped off

Seriously though, that's a good thing. If I had to pay for the apps on the PC, I'd be using openoffice and other freeware tools, there's no way I'd pay the bloated prices for some of the major software packages (including the OS). There are a few very useful utilities that I decided to actually buy, for example Total Commander.

OH and just an FYI being part of MSDN I have access to Microsoft products for free, might have tanken me longer then a year to get my system clean if I had to have paid for the OS and the Office software.

MSDN FTW

/Seconded

Got Vista, XP and server 2008 systems running in the House. I could never afford these kind of licenses if it wasnt for MSDN. Now i basicly have an enterprise environment at home.

Neither did I.

Of course, I'm using open source software to do it.

Me too.

okey i have a peeve when it comes to games being pirated.
Unless your a hugh company like Blizzard and EA, most companies put there whole future on the line when they come out with a game.

I think games should be bought, to promote the developers into making updates and patches. You steal games, you cut there RnD which means failed product and therefore no updates. :[

Software through STEAM is horrible. I would much rather have hardcopy of anything I own. I bought some old games - Xcom, jagged alliance - through STEAM and they don't play anymore. Good luck w/ your STEAM purchased games.

LOL 80 GB of non legal porn... noob.

Congrats on a clean system. I did the same thing recently with the purchase of my new macbook pro.

With that purchase, I was able to finally remove the last system from my house with a illegal copy of windows xp on it. Now my home network consists of my mac, my wife's machine (ubuntu), a firewall/router (ipcop), a file/backup/development server (ubuntu), and a small legit (via educational discount) computer that is running windows vista. All questionable music, movies, games, apps, etc were deleted from the backups. 99% of the stuff was replaced with open source software. Only a few things required me to buy anything, mostly programs I found for the mac that worked better then the open source counterparts.

Never said that I pirate games (used to a long time ago, not anymore - I have a pretty nice paying job and its not worth my time nor money to waste hours on a download) - but I digress.

Why should the customer have to pay for an unfinished product? If they want to roll out an unfinished product, shouldn't they charge less for it? 80% finished game = 80% of $50 ... pay as you go? ... the price of broken promises? Why should I have to pay for their inability to code or meet deadlines?

Make a game that works and is fun - people will buy it. case in point - Sins of a Solar Empire, no copy protection even! I'll give my money to Bioware and Blizzard because I know that they'll rarely disappoint - I'll give my money to Introversion (makers of Defcon) because they made a kick ass game that runs easy even on any machine - I'll give my money to Tell tale (Sam & Max) everytime because they consistently deliver some sick humor ...

EA / SOE / other asshats ... HELL NO!

Steam IS awesome. I lost my HL2 CD long long ago along with CDkey. When I wanted to play CS:Source again, I was really bummed that I'd have to pay again.

That is until I remembered about Steam and my login & password. I DLed the 7mb Steam agent and logged in. Then I was able to redownload the FULL game to my desktop using their super fast network.

I DLed 2 gigs in mere couple hours and I was playing CS:S again!

You can back up all of the games to a hard drive or a DVD.

They have a converter now for M4P's. I buy the music legally...but the converter (which 3rd party offer for commercial sale) is likely not.

It puts me in a dilemma. Is what I'm doing legal? I paid for the music on Itunes...but I likely violated Itunes TOS by converting their POS protected M4Ps to MP3. Itunes can't sue...but they can likely terminate my service.

The odds of them finding out though are 1 in a million if they even care.

MSDN FTW

Ok, that makes sense now. Anyone who pays full price for Office 2007 Enterprise for their HOME computer is either quite wealthy or quite stupid.

Yes I agree, I could not find a price for Office Enterprise I did see Office Ultimate and it was $679 Ouch.

Without MSDN I would of just kept my Windows XP and MS Word
