I tried the macro mode... sucked even worse!!! blury as all hell with or without the flash...

It's a kodak DC3800 from like 2000... it's crap!

Really? Macro allows you to take close in pictures. Do NOT use the zoom when using the macro. Zoom all the way out to wide, get close in (6-12 inches) and snap the shot.

Try to set them both down and use a remote or the cameras timer if it has one, or use a tripod if you have one of those (I know most people don't). On older cameras, I think movement/bluriness played a big role in how macro shots would come out. At least, that's the way I remember it being.

yeah the older cameras' macro modes are useless. Even the Canon A40 which is about 2-3 years old couldn't get a nice pic of the ring I got in macro mode.
