Barney Frank convinces GM CEO to keep his district's plant open...

GM announced Monday in its bankruptcy and restructuring plans it would close of nine of its plants and idle three others. The automaker said it would also shutter three service and parts operations by the end of the year ? one of which is in Frank's district...

Frank's staff said the lawmaker spokes with GM CEO Fritz Henderson on Wednesday and convinced him to keep the Norton, Mass. plant open for at least 14 months.

NPR reported 7 months, but maybe they meant 7 month extension and this was set to close in 7 months originally.

Frank said the plant was so small that keeping it going "wouldn't break the budget [for GM]". If it's that small, maybe its closing wouldn't hurt that much then, eh?

This is a terrible precedent but exactly what many saw coming and will not surprise many.

Of course when you let politicians run a company they will mess with it. This is a toy to them and will break it like every child does.

Government controlled private enterprise. We should all be worried over where this may end.

I thought Obama said they would not be involved in the day to day decisions of GM? Another lie by the TRAITOR IN CHIEF (A little shout out to Harvey there.)

While I agree with the premise of this thread (in that the Governement is getting involved and should get the fuck out of GM ASAP), I'm not sure what Obama has to do with this. Barney Frank != Obama administration.

Funny how quickly certain politicians who supposedly had "no interest in running GM" have quickly made a 180 and thrown around their political clout to meddle in the affairs of GM...to the politician's benefit, of course.

What a shock.

You can't see the correlation? Obama has said the government has "no interest in running GM". Barney Frank is one of the top henchmen on the O-Team. Already, we have a politician from the O-Team throwing his political weight around to get GM to do his bidding...

It is crystal clear.

Great...so instead of overpaid executives making poor decisions, we now have corrupt politicians with conflicts of interest making poor decisions.

Maybe I'm behind the times then because I didn't know that Barney Frank was part of the so called O-Team. My apologies if this is true (although I bet every politician, both R and D, are looking into keeping those plants open for their own states).

I sincerely hope that the government gets the fuck out of GM/Chrysler as fast as possible, but like many of you, I have my doubts.

It would appear so. Very sad (and I guess somewhat predicted).

Isn't a senator suppose to fight for their constituents? I know for example that Mike Dewine often fought to keep Wright Patterson well funded in Ohio. That was a big reason why he was able to win reelection.

Barney Frank is one of the more liberal Democrats in Congress, just like his good friends from Massachusetts, John Kerry and Teddy Kennedy.

I agree about all politicians would do something to save their own behinds, but it is the Obama administration that assumed control of GM, the Obama administration that is calling all the shots right now, and the Obama administration that has vehemently and repeatedly stated that the government has "no interest in running GM".

It's kind of a conflict of interests when a politician is pulling his weight to influence decisions in his favor at a government controlled corporation...

I can't even believe that my bolded statement is true...I feel like I'm in 1984 or Atlas Shrugged or the former USSR...

It is his duty, but he must be limited on what tools he can use and this is not one of them. The best way for the government to destroy GM is by more and more people doing this. GM is looking to shrink. If you have senators all trying to pull this, you'll see GM more and more screwed.

Barney may not be in Obama's cabinet but you can bet your ass Obama knows this happened. I doubt he'll admonish him in public, but I certainly hope he does in private. This is exactly what people were talking about when concerned about GM being taken over by gov. And I do believe it's exactly what Obama said would not happen. But now it has.

It's all about the money...always has been always will be.

I am beginning to think a nuclear holocaust would not be so bad.

Wow, totally naive and/or willful denial.

GM is government controlled.

Barney Frank is technically (one of) the CEO's boss.

You really think the CEO truly had a decision to make?

Mind-boggling...

You can damn sure bet that if the government wasn't involved in GM right now, the chances of said plant closing as scheduled would be much, much, much higher.

Does Frank have the authority to keep the factory open on his own? No.

I think not. When your boss "suggests" something, you would generally follow thru on his/her suggestion. Barney is a defacto boss as the government effectively is in control of GM.

Uh how hard is it when you own the god damned company? Is the govt not going to own 70% of GM?
