I'd do it, but I don't have reliable network, or storage atm :^(

LOL. You're a hell of a salesman
If you want to backup stuff to me you're more than welcome. I'd be looking at about 50GB of space needed to back up all my junk (99.9% jpgs) so no worry if you dont have that kinda space to free up.

If you want, PM me your email and I can "invite" you to my server.

I appreciate the offer, but I'm currently on "magic wifi", and a secondary machine. My main computer doesn't have net access, and most of the stuff on this machine was sneaker netted from my main rig, so is already kind of backed up :^D

so.... anyone want to be my "friend" for CrashPlan

its tempting.

12/mo for the cash+ is more than I want to spend thats for sure

if I had business cable I would, but I think doing real backups with someone would put me over the cap and get me in trouble with comcast.

Yeah, caps are going to kill something like this. I would say that my backups would be pretty small after the initial 40+GB backup. Though that could be avoided by mailing eachother pre-seeded HDDs. Every backup I'd do after that would be pretty small. Literally a few jpgs a week and office docs.

No worries though.

TAKING BACK MY RECOMMENDATION FOR SAFESYNC!

Holy hell, it deleted all of the folders in my program files. It hadn't even backed them up! I had to go back to a Mozy restore to get them back!

Being that it was from Trend Micro, I knew it had to be too good to be true.

hmmm.

then again, I would have to not back up some stuff, as I probably shouldnt have you hold on to some pics of my wife D:

You can limit bandwidth with Crashplan. Also, it won't matter if the transfers speed between you and your peers isn't fast anyway.

Yeah I saw that. Honestly, it doesn't affect me (no caps here), so I'm not overly concerned. But if I did have a cap, I don't think I'd want to sacrifice that limited resource so others could back up to me. And honestly I may not want to waste it to back up to them...

Man caps REALLY screw people over. I never even thought about it for a case like this.

LOL it's encrypted client side. Besides, you'd have my pics of my wife in return! tit-for-tat... literally!

That wasn't a "tech" though:

-- Brian Wilson
CTO, Backblaze

Brian Wilson, CTO
Co-founding MailFrontier in 2002, Brian Wilson built a powerhouse technical team who developed technology that won awards from Network World, Cnet, PC Magazine, and many others; has two granted and 15 pending patents; and is protecting email in thousands of enterprises and for millions of users worldwide. Prior to founding MailFrontier, he founded and managed a software consulting firm, Codeblaze. Previously, Wilson served as chief architect at Kendara, responsible for the company's technology development. He also has held senior technical positions at Apple, SGI, Hewlett-Packard, Tivo and Excite@Home. Wilson is a published author and has received a bachelor's degree in engineering-physics from Oregon State University and a master's degree in computer science from Stanford University.

<edit>so I read the rest of this thread and see this was addressed. Anyway, I am trying Backblaze. I was using Mozy's free 2GB, but quit after hearing of their price increase. I heard they were bought out by a larger company recently.

I am glad Mozy has increased in price because they are in a very niche area with the way their service works and it is the only one I would recommend to my friends. It is well worth the money.

Over the pass years they have really improved 10 fold.

Crashplan is ok but not good enough. Carbonite I hate.

Though I just use my own cloud service. Easy enough and I can control every last detail. The reason for doing it this way is you never have to use your internet bandwidth and it is always ultra fast! 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps easily just depends on what kind of network you have.

You've posted twice about your private cloud solution, but provided no information. Do you VPN and do rsync snapshots or something simple? Details man!
