Well my 1000W Silverstone crapped out...

So I bought a SST-ST1000 PSU 3 years ago, because well...it was pretty awesome and I wanted something awesomely efficient, reliable and future proofed. Well...it's 8 months out of warranty and the 12v rail died. I emailed them if they could service it and I would pay a fee. They emailed me back and said they do not do repairs so I'm SOL. Although I've been in the custom PC game for 15 years now and am aware that things like this happen I can't help but feeling disappointed. My OCZ Powerstream 420W (OCZ's first entry in the PSU market back in the day) is pushing 9 years and still runs stong and at 76% efficiency and it wasn't even a "flagship". But here is Silverstone's flagship that spent 3 years running only 35-40% load and it's already lost it's 12v rail.

But anyways enough of my crying. Time to shop. Can you guys help me out?

Here are my criteria:
Reliability
Efficiency(looking for 80Gold or Plat)
Warranty

What I'm running
i7 4770k
16GB (2x8GB)
R9 290X
2xSSD's
6xHDD's
1xODD
Full watercooling loop
8x120mm fan
1x140mm fan
1x200mm fan
1x240mm fan

Things I'll be adding in soon:
Another R9 290x
A second water cooling loop
more fans for the second loop

Overclocking will be done.

Soooooo any recommendations?

Looking at this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817438013
Same price as what I paid for the silverstone 3 years ago but a 10 yr warranty and now it's 80Platium now.

Any other recommendations will be appreciated.

without a doubt the best PSU reviews on the web

first off, i think you had bad luck with that particular unit, silverstone have very reasonable PSUs, you should look to get a free replacement. try it. you never know.

second, you really should look through johhny guru's site; my vote goes to the enermax<I REALLY MEANT EVGA ... OBVIOUSLY> 1000 G2 or 1300G2, apparently better than the P-series. Anyway, read it, you will be surprised at how many PSU come from the same factory.. and where quality can be found. (lol @ rosewill turning out to be one of the best PSU makers)

Next time get a PSU with 5 or 10 year warranty. 3 years is crap for a GPU or CPU but really crap and unacceptable for a PSU. PSUs should last much longer. My EVGA 1300W G2 has 10 year warranty which I really can't argue with. The Enermax initially was 3 years but they retrospectively increased this to 5 years.

I spent about 4 hours on there last night before I typed this thread up actually and I was on there when I made my decision to purchase the Silverstone 3 years ago. When I wrote the email to the CS, I was polite and told them I am aware that things like this happen and but was a little dissapointed that the unit only lasted a littel over 3 years. I asked them is there anything they can do for me or even if they could repair it for me and I would pay for the repair. Their response was simply they could do nothing. And yeah I knew about how pretty much all the PSU's were rebadged versions of one of 3-4 manufacturer's. That's why I chose my OCZ back in the day right went they were about to buy out PCPower&Cooling and were using one of their highly rated units. (of course after OCZ bought PCP&C they got rid of the US division and moved manufacturing over to china). I'm sure there's more OE manufacturer's. Back then it was only Season, FSP and PCPC and some other one I don't remember.

Yeah, that's why I'm eyeing the EVGA, when I purchased the Silverstone I put my faith in their reputation for building quality products. Oh well. Expensive lesson learned.

PCP&C never had any manufacturing, U.S. based or otherwise. All their power supplies were made by either Win-Tact for the Turbo-Cools or Seasonic for their Silencers. PCP&C made nothing.

My 650w evga from 2010 is still going like a champ in my r9 290 mining rig. If they had a decent sfx unit i'd use them in my next built too.

I'm sure you're right, but I remember reading an article from a review website going through their facilities in California where they engineered and fabbed actual units back in the mid 90's and they were interviewing the EE's working there along with a division that serviced units. Maybe it was more R&D then actual manufacturing.

Things break. With electronics, you have a circuit board, components, and soldering to attach the components to the board. Any of these things can break. Circuit boards...well, I would think are not the first suspect. Cold joints are not unavoidable. Or, a component since was a bad one from the factory. Or some transient just simply zapped the unit. My family had a Sharp sound system(cd player, cassette player, radio, etc) and a transistor just randomly died, rendering the entire unit non-functional.

Yup. But when you buy a premium item, the odds should be more in your favor because you're paying for better QC, I have owned many many electronics in my life and have few fail from time to time, I'm well aware of the potentiality of electronics failure (or car parts failure which I am super familiar with). I know it sounds like I'm whining about it but I know that there are always odds against one self. Nothing is perfect, I get that, it's how a company takes care of you. I'm not going to kick and scream about the issue. I just won't do business again with them. I managed retail for a long time, I know when a business picks their battles. An example is my previous mobo from this current board was an MSI. It had stability problems from the get-go. RMA'd it twice but the issue was never resolved. I ended up just dealing with it. The fact was MSI tried to take care of the issue. For that...I'm putting my faith in another board from them...because I know they would at least try to resolve the issue. (There are other factors). I did not ask a them for a free replacement, I offered them to pay for a repair. They said they do not have repair services...but I asked if they could help in anyway. I could think of a few creative but cost effective was for them to offer me help. But that is not my job.

5 years ago I would've scoured the internet and researched how to diagnose and fix this myself. But now I'm too old and too impatient for that.

Seasonic or Corsair will bail you out for another few years. TX models or better. I've been suing them for the past 8 years....not one has failed on several computers.

Sounds expensive...

Lmfao - .... i was going to comment... Suing "does" get expensive after a while.

Back on topic. From everything I have researched... your best bet is to find a "Seasonic" based Power supply. I believe JonnyGURU.com has some in depth reviews on power supplies.

If you really liked the PSU, then I would open it up for inspection (as you got nothing to lose) and the issue might be obvious (eg, an obviously damaged component). This could open the door to possible PSU repair. (Another possibility is to investigate a shop that can repair it.)

...and if you don't know what you are doing, you could do some serious damage to yourself by poking around an open PSU...
