At first I thought I hopped onto some modded server after every single person was playing with laser guns and people were disintegrating in mid air HL-2 style.

I don't like it sir. Not one bit. You can't even see anything because there are laser clouds all over the place.

Meh, adds flair. I don't find it too particularly annoying. I thoroughly enjoy the comic for it

It being retro-styled in a very nice way and buffing the Soldier, a class that could generally do with a buff, I have had no issues with it. They still burn the same.

Soldier didn't need a buff, especially not through a weapon I have X% chance to find at random or buy for $9.99.

I hated that I joined my regular server and about a 1/3rd of the players were Soldiers with the new weapon. It basically makes heavies unplayable right now because you're going to eat those shots, especially when spun up.

Stopped playing long ago. The class additions were good and bad. Variety is nice!

You could always, ya know, craft one for $0 and have a 100% chance of getting one.

This. The soldier didn't need any additional content, especially since the Uber update just came out like 2-3 weeks ago... I enjoy the updates generally, but this weopon, while NOT OP like everyone is screaming, just kind of clashes with the theme of the game IMO. I don't hate it or anything, it just annoys me that eveyone is playing soldier right now, and I am almost always a natasha heavy...

Btw, I want my old backburner back

Sweet jesus, why does an FPS have a crafting system? That's why I never got into TF2, it's just ridiculous.

I stuck it to the devs by buying the game and never playing it too.

Why is TF2 updating every other day with another 150mb patch? What are they adding so frequently?

I haven't played for a year or so.

I've got mixed feelings about the new weapons but they are definitely not overpowered and it's not a soldier buff.
The laser that replaced the rocket launcher:
does less damage than any other rocket to players,
does almost no damage to buildings,
the splash damage from the laser shot is closer to that of the direct hit,
the speed of the projectile is slower than any rocket (a heavy with a spinning minigun can dodge it from medium range),
it takes a long time to reload after the full charge shot (leaving you vulnerable to attack by anyone near if you missed), and
you move super slow while charging the shot (leaving you easy prey for snipers and spies or anyone close to you with good aim).

On the plus side, two full charged shots in a crowd of people = full buff banner! That and you can run around shouting pew pew pew at people.

Err..... Much of that is wrong.

It goes the exact same damage as the standard rocket launcher and black box. The animation makes it seem slower, but it's not.

It does slightly less base damage, but has a higher ramp up, thus roughly equivalent damage.

It's got the same splash as a standard rocket.

The first 'rocket' reload takes slightly longer, but it has 5 shots.

The reduced damage versus sentries is it's weak point - theoretically. The charged shot which disables sentries tends to counter that though. It's other weak side is no random crits - but it's currently broken. It doesn't crit at all, ever - nor does it minicrit on a successful reflect, which is an improvement over the basic rocket launcher.

It doesn't need a massive nerf, but it does need some adjustment. And the animation really needs to be cleaned up to make it's location crystal clear.

lol, as fun as it can be to use laser guns, I have to say I'm glad I no longer care about the game. It was a fun run, but Valve just had to make it their Steam test lab.

Not crazy about this addition, feels unnecessary but whatever... I'll get used to it since it's not going anywhere. After a few weeks things will settle down again and I think people will gravitate back to the regular launchers. They seem more flexible.

I just find it funny they first make you pay for the game, it wasn't always free, then charge for access to get the items in it.

I am glad I didn't care when I played it a long time ago and stuck with decent fps that don't rip you off like that.

A fps should be about skill and teamwork, not who spends the most.

It is. Unless you think the hats give you powers...

Technically speaking, you could craft said items without having to spend money. However, to do this with every weapon in the game would take a LONG time, so the basic principle of "pay to win" does somewhat apply to the new TF2.

If you play the game with the developer commentary, it's interesting to see just how far they've veered from the original game design goals. Personally I don't blame them, they saw a chance to make a lot of money and cashed in.

TF2 wasn't ridiculous to begin with, it was pretty much OK. Things like crafting were added quite a bit into its life.

First, Valve doesn't charge you to access the new weapons. They do sell the weapons in the store for those who do not want to get it through other means, but that is just one of several ways to get new items. With TF2 being free now, they make their money from the store. I'm fine with that as long as items that affect gameplay can be had without making a purchase.

Second, new weapons do not give one an inherent advantage over someone who does not have these weapons. Valve keeps everything balanced, and will nerf weapons if necessary. You can be just as effective playing with vanilla weapons on a free TF2 as someone who's played the game since release and has every weapon.

But don't let the facts keep you from whining.

Unfortunately this just isn't true. The game has suffered from a bit of power creep for a while now, and there are more than a few unlocks which are direct upgrades over the vanilla weapons they replace. Plus many new unlocks are countered by other unlocks, so someone with just vanilla weapons is outta luck there. And if they want to trade for weapons to get them faster than hoping on the random drop system (or waiting to craft, which requires giving up other unlocks they already own), they have to "upgrade" to a premium account and buy something from the store first (unless they recently changed that restriction).

90% of my gear is vanilla and without sounding like i'm a uber-pro or anything, manage to do pretty well in the game. the other weapons are neat but don't really change much in the game.

I'm liking the introduction of the "strange" weapons as most are vanilla weapons. It's got a lot of people playing standard again and it's fun.

General rule: If you're not having fun, then you're doing it wrong.
