I deposited a few 100s into a envelope free ATM this weekend and one was rejected but not returned..
But the bank has yet to account for it.

Exactly right.Yep, it's pretty silly to come up with new money that supposedly can't be counterfeited while the old money is still good. WTF cares if a 2013 $20 bill can't be faked if guys can still churn out copies of the 2010 $20. Or for that matter a perfect copy of a 1973 $20. If you don't mandate currency exchanges so that old stuff is taken out of circulation it's just pissing up a rope.
The old stuff is taken out of circulation though. If you try to show up with a bunch of 2005 bills, for example, even if it's still legal tender it's going to attract the wrong kind of attention. Because I'm a contractor, I get a check...can't get direct deposit. I stop at my company's bank and cash it, keep a bit out for spending money and deposit the rest in my bank's ATM. Its Chase so none of them use envelopes. Now I'm going to be scared to deposit these stupid things.
