If you have to wear anything under the wetsuit, wear wool. It's one of the few fibers that will retain insulation properties when wet.

What river are you hitting? I started on the Lehigh (BORING!!) and moved on to the Hudson, Moose, Kennebec, Dead, Penobscott, Cheat, New and Gauley.
DO NOT WEAR WOOL UNDER A WETSUIT!!! read my above post. It will promote flushing which will cool you down.

Yes, wool keeps you warm when it gets wet, but that is on land. In the water, under a wetsuit, it's bad.

Alright, how bout this question... Are we really going to get that wet that the flushing effect of the wetsuit is going to be a problem?
2 possibilities.

1. No
2. Yes

It depends on whether or not you go overboard or flip your boat - which they might MAKE you do at the begining of the trip as a drill.
Hmmm, sounds fun Thanks for all the info Mwilding, it's good stuff.

The wildest river I've gone rafting on was the kicking horse in Canada. Even though it was in the middle of summer, the river was swollen from glacier run-off that made the water ~5 degrees Celsius. Awesome time.

I didn't wear anything under the wetsuit except for my boxers. As far as I know, I didn't catch any diseases. At the end of the trip everyone put their suits into warm soapy water, so I guess they got a little clean at least.

When that first splash of freezing cold water hits you, hoo boy. Your body heats quickly warms up the water soaked into your wetsuit, though (which is why I think it's important not to have clothes between your body and the wetsuit).

You are welcome. Do you have a link to the guide you are using?

It takes a lot of energy to heat that water up. If you have to do it several times, THAT is what gives you a deep down body chill that will ruin your trip.

Anyone else been on the Gauley River in West Virginia? That's the only place I've ever gone, but it was AMAZING.

Man, I wish I could go white water rafting I went two times on the Ocoee river (sp?) in Tenesse and had a blast. The second time I went, everyone (including the guide!) fell off the raft! That was the craziest trip evaaaaaaar

I hope you're not renting the wetsuit... it's nasty with everyone else wearing them.

I opted to wear just a bathing suit and shell pants instead of renting a wetsuit. It wasn't terribly cold even though it was semi-raining. You'll live.

im going down to the new river in WV for the second time, doing the lower part. it is from class II - V rapids, it was the first river i rafted on 5 years ago, and the other river i do not remember the name of was 2 years ago. It is a very fun river, previous time we went, we did not tip it was a group outing, with like 40 ppl we knew. i was in a raft full of kids, i was 13 then, and the guide had to do a ton of work as i was one of the older ones on the boat.

of course, on our last river we flipped, they told us to put the stronger paddlers on one side, and the weaker paddlers on the other, problem was, that i was so much stronger then my brother, that my dad had learned to compensate for my paddling compared to my brothers, and he did not adjust fast enough, we slammed into like a 20 ft rock, and flipped. lost a bag full of like waterproof cameras and sunscreen, but that was about it.

its so much damn fun.

I've done both the Upper Gauley and the Lower Gauley, the Lower New River (the Upper New sucks) as well as the Cheat River. My friends and I did them all in the same trip as new England to West Virginia is too long a trip for a single day of rafting. It was a great week, but the whitewater is the only reason to go to West Virginia.

Great pics, who took those?

The whitewater company had a guy that went down the river to certain spots and waited for us.
Then you could buy a cd with all of the pics on it for $50. There was about 30 pics total for our raft. They used a Canon EOS 10D.

sweet pictures!

I have a video of my trip down the River Futaleufu, if I could capture it I would post it.

My digital camera was stolen on the way back, so I have no photos...
