I have to correct some numbers before we go on.
I've been in the navy awhile now.
In 92' we had alot more than 393 ships. It was closer to 693.
The current figures are probably accurate.

If the democrats are so horrible why doesn't somebody push them out and fix things? Whats that you say? We have these people called republicans? Oh goodie. Im glad you brought them up because I didnt want to.

I distinctly recall the GOP controlling the house and the senate when clinton was elected. I remember them all slapping each other on the butts and giving handjobs because it was the first time in a long time they had it back.
Now we are on our 2nd term with an elephant president and I have to say I have seen plenty with both sides in control.

Not sure about the other forces but in the Navy we take a written exam to advance. This ensures that people who are good test takers move up while folks who are good at their job will waste away and hit high-year-tenure. Then they cant reenlist. This has created an environment where the sailors staying in are thinking more about how to keep their job than how to do their job. We also have less spare parts than ever before. Professional training is at an all time low. Our motto has slowly been changing to "Do more with less". Unfortunately the military is ALWAYS supposed to be efficient. So really its just 'Do less'.

The Chief of Naval Operations was told to cut manning by 10% (before end of fiscal year) or else he's out of a job. This has led to some pretty wacky ideas of how to get sailors out quickly.

MEANWHILE, the Navy contracts out to more private companies everyday. Civilians take care of the barracks, supply, maintenence and IT jobs in a much bigger way than ever before. Soon sailors may not be needed.
The problem is these folks make MUCH more money than the sailors. And they only work 9 to 5. A military career is 24-7-365. We dont get overtime. Even with the housing allowances, meal allowances and special pays, sailors get less than the contractors.

I would much rather see the money we DO have being managed better. It may help to tell the politicians to stop politicking and start fixing problems. They're too busy pointing fingers and working on next terms election campaign to actually take care of bussiness.
Until the situation improves I'm not concerned with whether a democrat or republican can screw things up better. In the military we make results, not promises.

Before any of the other vets chastise me about speaking out against my chain-of-command: Dont Worry. I hit high-year-tenure and will be out soon. After 8 years I can finally pass on this mess to the rest of the navy. Who, by the way, is recruiting at an all time high.

Well written and said Sir.

I have worked on a Base recently doing IT work, I can fully back up what he is saying about Civies staffing. The amazing shortfall of this is 9-11 for example. As soon as something happens all Civies must exit the Bases leaving huge Gaps in the service that they provide that the undermanned and untrained Military in the position the Civies are staffing such as IT so the Military is actually more vulnerable.

Genius , NOT
